No the games people think of that should have been SA3 were a bit wide of the mark.
Were they really, though? Heroes was just another SA2, Unleashed took the Adventure Formula and Rush's boost mechanic and spliced them together (not to mention its story which is virtually identical - just on a larger scale - it's a stretch but you could also class the Werehog as another character), and '06 straight up IS an adventure formula game, no matter how you look at it. As bad as that game is, it follows a very similar gameplay progression to the first Sonic Adventure, that being traverse hub world, enter stage, traverse hub world, fight boss.
All that aside, even if you couldn't class those games as SA3s I still wouldn't care too much for another entry. Adventure 2 wrapped up the duology adequately enough for me.
