Yes - if it is handled correctly. And to do that, I am afraid you will have to get Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima back into Sonic Team- ain't going to happen. The bridges were burnt a long time ago. I don't trust Lizuka to make a great game. To pull that off, you'd need to top the great storylines of both SA1 and SA2 and I've thought about this for years... how do you do something like that.
I also think those games were a function of the era they were produced in - SEGA being in financial trouble, and the push to make the game great, as if they were all going for the last time... Many people commented that Sonic Adventure 2 was produced under a very stressful office vibe, people unsure of whether they would have a job and the prospect of it being the last time they ever did a Sonic game.
No- I think the other games make up for it some degrees.
