See, the the reason the second film doesn't give Robotnik a concrete fate is because Jim Carrey has expressed interest in retirement, and Paramount obviously won't want anyone else playing Robotnik in the films (the difference would be too jarring). So, if Carrey is on board with returning, they can just say "Robotnik survived". And if he chooses to retire, they can just say "Robotnik died". Like BDB said, Only time will tell.

Now, in 4 days, the annual "The Game Awards" stream will be air. Given the second Sonic Movie got a trailer at the 2021 Game Awards, I wouldn't be surprised if the Paramount Knuckles TV series gets one (especially considering it's coming out early next year, and we've seen nothing). So it's possible we'll get an explanation of Robotnik's fate there. It seems too early for a full Sonic Movie 3 trailer, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have a short teaser clip prepared.

I hope he returns but there is no way they could ever bring that character back which wouldnt make much sense robotnik is a series staple.

This teaser image of Shadow? It was posted on Jason Griffith's birthday.

Some people think that's a hint that maybe they'll get Griffith back to voice Shadow in the movie. I do know that about a year ago, Jeff Fowler said they were waiting for a response from a famous Hollywood actor they wanted to voice Shadow. But if that guy never responded (or turned down the role), I see Griffith as a possibility.

Is that the original voice actor from Sonic Adventure 2? I know about the Sonic VAs but not the Shadow ones. Never really paid attention I guess.

I always like returning talent but so far the cast they chose to voice the current characters were great. Who knew jean ralphio would be a good sonic voice and idris elba did fantastic as knuckles. Even tails with colleen was a good match. Whoever they choose im sure will be a good fit.

No, Dave Humphrey was the one voiced Shadow in SA2 and Heroes. Jason Griffith was the English voice of Sonic and Shadow between 2005 and 2010.

Ah I see, I didn't know he did both Sonic and Shadow. I remember Shadow's voice changing but not that different, still similar. Either way, it would be cool to have him back as the voice for the movie.

That's a good point. Unless Jim told them at the end of the second movie or during the start of the third they would not have any idea if he wasn't coming back and would have started the script with Robotnik in it.

If Jim doesn't come back I bet that they get a different actor and focus on Gerald Robotnik which is probably the best alternative to just having such a big role completely absent from the third movie.

They definitely already know whether or not Jim Carrey's coming back - they've done a lot of filming already.
It's likely that they just want to keep it a secret, for one reason or another.
