Sonic is most best as a high speed platformer, i am not confident about a mainline 3d game being a collect-a thonTo be fair, I think that if a mainline Sonic game were to be a Collect-A-Thon, the collectibles would be collected in a similar structure to the Orbs or Eggs in the OG Spyro Trilogy by having Sonic talk to characters and do a mission for said collectible, i.e. a race against another character, collecting rings in a Sonic 2-esque Special Stage, collecting all the Blue Spheres in a Sonic 3&K Special Stage, have Knuckles run around and collect stuff like in his Emerald Hunting levels from the Adventure games, defeat a Mini-Boss, have Tails go into a Tails Adventure or Sky Patrol type stage, etc. This game would NOT have collectibles that are equivalent to the gems for notes scattered in each level, as that would not work.

I like games that make finding things a challenge(as long as it's not too challenging). As for the main levels, the goal would be to free the animals from Badniks (minus the whole bringing them to a goal thing). You'd have to defeat all the Badniks and get all the Mission Items for 100% Completion, though for an Any% run you'd only need at least maybe a 30 - 40% Completion. The Mission Items could potentially be Master Emerald Shards, Red Rings, Chaos Emerald Shards, Sol Emerald Shards, Ancient Gears, Power Rings, etc. (Obviously, it wouldn't be all of these examples in the same game, maybe just 2 or 3 of the Mission Item examples or maybe something more original, who knows?)

It's about learning new skills and exploring the map. While there are some levels that have you beat a big boss, those typically are only one level out of the many for that specific world. You clearly haven't played the OG Spyro Trilogy if that's your thought process. But yeah, it does stray from the norm.
