Indeed, though i have to agree with Jim Carry on what he said here:

“I believe in auteurs. I believe in creatives. We do what we can do and then technology is going to have its way and people’s opinions are going to have their way. And who knows what it’s going to turn into? You just become their Frankenstein monster at some point, right?”

I can understand where he is coming from, too many cooks in the kitchen and you will never please everyone.
Plus he echoes some of our worries about crunch and how it can hurt creators.
Both the videogame industry and Hollywood are known for horrible crunch periods.
I know when he said that he got some flack from some sonic fans but I kind of agree here.

It looks WAAAAAAY BETTER. Now we can say he's a Sonic... something he should have been since the first trailer, but OH WELL...
Still, this gets my hopes up. Don't get me wrong, the plot will be the same, but at least we'll have Sonic in the big screen doing some cool action stunts.

As for Jim Carrey's words, I can get where he's going into, but the only thing they changed was the design. A design that was highly unpleseant. A design that looked nothing like the character it was supposed to be.

Well yeah but as unpleasant as the original design was there was still some work that went into it, creating a CGI model is not as easy as it sounds.
You have to worry about lighting, shading, dynamics of the environment, etc.
We take CGI for granted as a cheap easy way out of creating practical effects but there is effort to be made.
Say what you will about the original design it did look like there was effort put into it, its not like it looked like it was a model that was made in photoshop in 2 minutes but perhaps months or even years to create.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they took a lot of time in developing that first model, and, as ugly as it might look IMO, changing it now is a huge extra effort that the CGI department has to work on... and also means that more money has to be invested.

I'm not saying that they went through an easy process, what I wanted to say is that Carrey sees it as a man who knows the industry from inside, and we see it as fans of the original source material. We wanted Sonic to look better, and Carrey probably fears that this might become a precedent that might cause more problems in the future because of listening too much to the public BEFORE a product sees the light of day.

So yeah, this change, while liked by most people, might hurt future creators.

Indeed, thus why I agree with Carry.
I mean yeah its nice to be passionate about things but some fandoms these days are downright nasty.
Its one thing to be critical and its another thing to be a total dick about it.

Yeah, I disliked the first trailer, sure, but that doesn't give me right to be unpolite to the creators. They have jobs, they try to make a living out of this, and I'm sure none of them wanted to upset the public. They just made a series of decisions that turned out to be mostly critized. And heck, we know we shouldn't blame the CGI department, or even Jim Carrey for this! Again, they try their best.

And actually, I think we have to thank the CGI department for being so committed. Even if the "ugly design" was a marketing stunt like many think, they went the extra mile to make an alternate model they know wouldn't be used in the final product. If the "conspiracy theory" is fake and they had to remake ALL the scenes Sonic was featured in... then they went THE EXTRA THOUSAND MILES! That's something to be grateful for: not only did the director Jeff Fowler apologize and listen to the community, but the post-po team had to make the changes.

I doubted going to the cinema having the previous design on screen, but now? Now I'll go knowing that this creative team probably did their best.

Yeah I was not planning on seeing the movie before (rental only) but now I will see it if only for the movie to get back its budget and pay off those animators.

As much as I think Jim's on the money, you have to take into consideration how quickly the studio knee-jerked into changing the original design. That suggests a few possible things. Either they had this design in mind to begin with and wanted to push the envelope on something a little riskier, or, and this is far more likely (at least to my cynical brain), it wasn't something designed with passion and the studio cares more about people actually seeing the movie and attracting an audience than they do about any sort of artistic integrity. Listening to feedback is one thing, but they did radically change his design and confirmed doing so incredibly quickly. It almost seemed like it was planned.

That being said, he's much more visually appealing now. He's actually somewhat endearing instead of being terrifying.

The thing is that I dont buy into some of the conspiracy theories though, thats a lot of money down the drain for a movie that may not be big at the box office.
