for context, with the vast improvements for emulated netplay (especially for gamecube and wii games via dolphin) over the last few years i've seen several sixth and seventh generation games receive renewed interest in their multiplayer modes, with some even sprouting brand-new competitive multiplayer scenes. an incomplete list is below (with corresponding videos where available):
- sonic riders (i didn't care about this game at all as a kid, but i've tried the dx version and it's pretty great!)
- super mario strikers & mario strikers charged
- kirby air ride
- revenge of the sith (PS2)
this trend of multiplayer revivals is immensely fascinating to me because there is an unbelievable amount of untapped potential and depth that some of these games have once they're taken seriously. much like melee, they blossom into entirely different experiences when a dedicated group of people is sitting around trying to push them to their limits. i didn't play much sonic multiplayer as a kid, but i would be very interested in seeing if there was any interest in diving back into the multiplayer modes of sa2, shadow, s3&k, or any of the other multiplayer modes sonic has had to see if there's anything worthwhile in there. i've been trying to make this pitch in various places for almost a year now, but there's been no takers so far - wanted to see how folks on this board felt about it.
(additionally, if any of you actually did play multiplayer sonic a lot on the genesis or in the gamecube / wii era, i would be interested in hearing what the extent of your experiences were and if it was any fun.) - sonic riders (i didn't care about this game at all as a kid, but i've tried the dx version and it's pretty great!)

First of all, oooh Mario Strikers Charged my beloved underrated masterpiece!
Honestly, I think you got it right on the money with S3&K and SA2. I remember having a lot of fun with my step-brother on S3&K's versus, and while I haven't tried SA2's with anyone, I feel like I've seen enough tech around to warrant it getting a bit more limit-breaking from a wider community.
Though my real candidate here is actually kind of an obvious one. Sonic Battle.
May be a little bias since I've played this game almost religiously, but I seriously think you could get some sort of "Kusoge" community on Sonic Battle. It's broken and unbalanced in all the fun ways, and surprisingly high execution if you wanna get fancy. I can already envision the tier-lists right now. Poor Gamma getting Ganon tier and Cream being in a surprisingly high spot because holy crap those disjoints. Shadow is absolutely top-tier, though.
I believe VisualBoyAdvance has built-in netplay much like Dolphin does, so I can't see setup being much of a hassle. And honestly, It'd just be neat to see a Gameboy Advance game of all things getting high level play. -

I remember when my school friend had a Genesis and Sonic 2, and we always played the co-op and multiplayer together, I never got to experience such a thing with S3&K which is a shame bcuz co-op w/ Tails would actually be much more fun than just cheesing bosses.
but in terms of a multiplayer revival, I'm really happy to say that Sonic the Fighters has been getting a sort of a revival, with it even releasing its first ever balance patch w/ Community Edition! and I think that's great bcuz ppl like wusstunes has been making great videos explaining the history of the competitive scene of the game which goes all the way back to around the release of Sonic Gems Collection! GuileWinQuote also made a great video abt it which was nice bcuz they're a well known FG youtuber
as for Sonic Riders, it would genuinely be nice to see a revival for that as well bcuz I think the game is great in terms of skill expression, although it leaves much to be desired in modern days where the Sonic cast has continued to grow and feature so many amazing characters! I've seen projects like Tournament Edition and DX, which are great bcuz they're reworking the games system and balancing things so all shortcuts seem fair, and that characters have their own unique stats. I've also seen for DX that they're trying to make custom stages possible, which I think will also help a lot w/ the online multiplayer scene
unfortunately I haven't played much of Sonic Battle, but I agree w/ Tomi that smth like that would be really cool to build a multiplayer scene around... especially since it's a sprite game I feel like modding it would become quite popular to add other characters in the game! (speaking of kusoge, I forgot Melee is considered a kusoge by a large group of ppl... it's only natural for Sonic to have multiple kusoge communities...) -

embarrasingly sonic battle is one of the only sonic games i've never even played - i have it on my deck, i just haven't ever launched it. now that y'all bring it up i'll make a point to actually play it and see how it is! if i end up liking it i'll look into what it takes to get gba netplay goin these days -

a video similar to this topic actually showed up on my YT feed today! it's nice that other ppl are also realizing the competitive potential of other Sonic Games thanks to Fighters gaining popularity

crazy timing! glad to see someone singing the praises of fighters and riders dx - i've been playing the latter quite a bit recently trying to grind up to a point where i could conceivably join those discord tournaments. it's such an underrated gem -

HUGE agree here. i love sonic battle to bits, it's such a unique game with so much potential, but the ai leave a lot to be desired. it'd be a lot of fun to play properly multiplayer. especially with the character of emerl and the massive amount of customization it allows you have.
i don't personally play games competitively so i can't really speak to how that would go. but imagining this game having a dedicated competitive scene sounds wild in the best way possible with how busted it can get. i'd love to see it get a similar treatment to fighters just to see what kind of bizarre strategies people will come up with.
