Aye! Coming in late to this thread from it's mention
somewhere else, more so 'cause I was only a few days late to joining the site when it got posted.
I find the Sonic OVA to be really something quite special that doesn't get as much credit as it should. I recently started making it a yearly tradition to watch it on my birthday, along with many more Sonic-related indulgences to pester my family with.
But really, I never get bored of repeat watchthroughs, I find it entertaining and fascinating all the time. It got to
that point of familiarity where I'm saying a lot of the lines in tandem with the characters actually saying them as I just find the dubbing really charming in their deliveries.
I wouldn't be able to tell you why Knuckles saying "Sonic! Grab a hold!" has gotten stuck in my head as much as it did...
That's a good starting point; the English cast. I adore them all. And they may even be my preferred voices for Sonic and Tails. Voice acting is something I hold in high esteem in any piece of media, and it may just be personal preference, but the VAs to be perfect here, and as I said, I love the line deliveries.
Specially for Tails.
Once you get past the initial weirdness of the nasally voice, I think this is my most favorite version of Tails ever. He's just so friggin' cute! Something about the voice and the way he's animated, I dunno... it's just so different from how you see Tails anywhere else and it actually makes him my favorite character in the OVA. Odd for me, since Tails as a character had never really interested me in any other Sonic media.
Though I guess you can't speak of characters being different without mentioning Knuckles as well...
He's part of that fascination I get from the OVA because of how Knuckles is basically a different character here. My best guess that they just needed a character to fill a role in the story, and the Sonic franchise didn't really have that many characters at the time so might as well get Knuckles in to complete the trio.
While not my favorite version of Knuckles, I still very much like him. He says he's explored the Land of Darkness and hence he knows a lot about it, and it's safe to assume Sonic here keeps his common trait of loving to explore as well, but instead the Land of the Sky. So in a way, I see Sonic and Knuckles still being opposites to each other in that regard, both being explorers of opposite lands, which I find pretty neat.
Also he has
THE HAT. But lets not forget
SUNGLASSES as well.
And this is just touching on individual characters, not to mention the fact this introduces a whole new world we only get a few sights of. I wouldn't go as far to say I wish for some sort of sequel, I understand how something being one and done makes it all the more precious, but I guess I more so wish to see more fan content take elements from the OVA, because really, it's quite a unique vibe you don't see anywhere else with Sonic. (And I say fan content because like heck we're seeing anything from the OVA back in any official capacity in
this day and age.)
Most surprising of all though, I wasn't all that interested in the second half with Metal Sonic, despite him kind of being the main drag of the whole thing. Don't get me wrong, this is the coolest Metal has ever been, and definitely set a precedent for depictions of his character in both official and fan work. But every time I'm done watching, I'm more just reminiscing about the funny scenes with Sara or all the funny noises Tails makes. Though that's definitely just a me thing of how I choose to enjoy my media.
It's kind of reminiscent of how I enjoy watching the cutscenes of both the Adventure games. It's less about the plot that's happening in them and more just noticing little quirks of character animation and voice acting so I can point them out later on later playthroughs. Which I guess is why I enjoy the OVA so much, it's just one big cutscene for me to overanalyse without ever thinking of the actual story!
Overall, I find the Sonic OVA to be insanely fun, and much like your typical Sonic game, very replayable. It's just a very charming watch all the way through with some cool action breaking it all up. And I haven't even touched on animation and sound design (which has my favorite "Tails' namesakes whirring" sound, by the way). It's sad that it's kind of the only one of it's kind, but at the same time, it's what makes it all the more special.

There is no logic as to how the cool robotic double takes up less brain space than the weird one-off catgirl for me...
