I assume Trip would be making a return. I personally would prefer some time without Trip to make her appearance in Superstars a little more unique, but that game didn't do bad at all so it's safe to assume SEGA would be wanting her in at least the next game, so we have a confirmation there.
As for the return of other Classic characters...? I wouldn't hold my breath. We were lucky to get Fang, let alone in multiple games back to back.
I mean, in my opinion I prefer it that way. Characters showing up constantly makes them feel less special and the world less alive, like they're all tied down specifically to Sonic for the sake of being part of the adventures, but I digress.
as much as I love Trip (and I love her a lot but that's for another discussion...) I agree it would be too soon to see her again in another game, it also felt like she was meant to stay on Northstar Island after everything that happened- kind of like a Knuckles situation but, we know how often Knuckles leaves Angel Island these days so...
prior to Superstars it seemed like she never seen anyone else before and was scared to attempt to defend the Island from Fang, so it feels natural that she would stay on the Island and prevent someone from trying to release the dragon in the purple egg again
and like you said,
we were lucky we got Fang back in a game and with the Fang the Hunter mini-series taking place before Superstars I feel like there'll be some kind of write-off for Bean and Bark...
to theorize abt a new classic Sonic game is difficult, mostly bcuz I'm taking a lot into consideration, like how we know we're not getting a 'Mania 2' and there's also a divide of classic and modern character, meaning we shouldn't be seeing the classic Chaotix ever again either (but, the Knuckles 30th Anniversary Comic hasn't been released yet, so we'll see...)
the Fang comics and Sonic Mania have solidified my opinion that it would be nice to visit one of the classic islands again, the Northstar Islands were fine as an introduction to the new 2.5D style but now I'm homesick for West Side Island and even South Island! I'm not saying these islands have to be drastically changed but it would be nice to see if the Islands changed in any way w/ Eggman building and then abandoning zones like Chemical Plant and Oil Ocean on West Side Island, does he come back to them? did Tails take them over? could
someone else take them over? I know we've already seen a "what if" situation for West Side Island bcuz of Mania but it was my best example since Scrap Brain blew up at the end of Sonic 1 and Flying Battery was a flying fortress that could really go anywhere even if it was from Sonic 3&K
even just a Sonic game w/ no real urgency would be nice, I don't think SEGA realizes how fun it is
just to be in the zones and take in the locals, Angel Island is a good example since it has snowy peaks and a desert on the same island. I assume it would be difficult to sell a Sonic game basically about nothing and enjoying your time on an island but at the same time ppl come back to these original classic games enough that I think it would work out... sorry it seems like my reply is a bunch of nothing but in the end I guess I do want a "Mania 2" in some regard where I just get to revisit classic zones but I know that's not going to happen so my theorizing for a next classic game is really limited...
