There is a lot of the DNA of Dragonball Z within the Sonic series, with the foremost obvious reference being super Sonic himself. The other major influences on the series include the blue sphere stage in Sonic 3 and Knuckles, which was also inspired by King Kai's planet.

Another one, confirmed by Judy Toyota (AKA Yasushi Yamaguchi) on Twitter also confirmed that Sonic and Tails' relationship was inspired by Piccolo and Gohan:

dragon ball's influence on sonic continued even up to sonic '06, with leaked documents for the script, although temporary, said "essentially, think trunks from dragon ball z"

Nice to see some correlation from DBZ to 06! (The way 06 was crafted, it's not surprising.)

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 especially always felt very DB-influenced to me. The final boss was even originally planned to be a giant green dragon, before they replaced it with an Eggman robot.
