Time/Score-Attacking
Tominique > 03-27-2024, 10:36 AM
One of the things I like most about Sonic games is the sheer replayability the games have. They really are a perfectionist's type of games, keep trying over and over to get the better times and the better score. And when searching here, I didn't find a proper general Time/Score-Attack thread here, so might as well do my own!
So yeah, simple stuff. I feel we rarely talk about playing the actual games here, so this is a thread about sharing recorded runs of any Sonic game, or fan-game, and possibly talking about it. Optimization, that sort of stuff.
I'll start.
Of course, an Score-Attack run on my favorite Sonic game, on my favorite level with my favorite game character. And this is part of my quest to S-Rank all of Sonic Rush. I actually didn't know about trick finishers back when recording, so there's actually a whole lotta more points I could have gotten in this run.
And a more traditional Time-Attack on Advance 2. I find this run to be nearly perfect aside from a little hiccup at around 25 seconds In-Game-Time, and I also didn't know about the starting boost you could get if you timed the countdown just right. So really, both of these are kind of invalid runs...
But oh well! I'm also making this thread as a motivator for me to start doing more runs, I cycle between Sonic games a lot, so there's a lot of good times and score to get.
I don't have closing words because saying something like "let the games begin!" would be really embarassing if this thread went silent from the word "GO!" so...
Hey, thinking of Time-Attacking Amy's story in Sonic Adventure 1. That sounds... novel. -

I totally agree! The best thing abt Sonic games is their replayability, whether it be going for speed or score; there was a nice video I watched once that talks about how time/score go hand in hand, someone could play the stage quicker and get a lot of points from the time bonus or take out badniks along the way and although it takes more time, they still get a highscore from the badniks and rings they collected along the way!
ofc different Sonic games have
I've never considered recording my own playthroughs of games, despite really loving speedruns and score attack runs... I think I'm more intimidated than anything by recording softwarethe closest I would have at the moment is a listing of my best times in games like Sonic Riders and Heroes, I jokingly do SA2 speedruns for friends on discord as my lame party trick but
Best Laps in Riders
Metal City 00'39''48
Egg Factory 00'56''28
White Cave 00'45''50
Sand Ruins 00'50''39
Dark Desert 00'49''62
Digital Dimension 00'50''93
none of these lap times are amazing or anything, and I can upload my ghost data for anyone willing to challenge them (/half joking) but they're glitchless and my personal PBs; but similar to as Tomi said, it would be cool to see other ppls records for games they play, even if they're just end of stage screenshots; I wish I had more to contribute at the moment but I wanted to reply to this thread asap even if all I have are simple lap times
you know I'll always reply to your threads Tomi... you will never have a silent thread with me around... -

Oh man, I actually used to play a ton of Riders, but I hadn't actually done pure time attack for the base game.
Base game because I did do time-attack back-and-forth with a friend on Sonic Riders Tournament Edition after we couldn't get the online play to work. Though it got pretty stale after a while since that mod is balanced around 1v1 battles and not time-attack, so what ended up happening is we would just pick Jet with the Fastest Gear (Gear literally named "Fastest") and that was basically the meta.
With that said, those are some seriously impressive times, so I guess I finally have motivation for doing Riders time-attack with competition around, I actually only have Free Race times recorded.
I'm still not too deep in Riders time-attacking so I'll be getting to routing right away! I assume we're gentlemanning this to default Gears.
Now let the games begi-

The fun part is whether gentlemanning or not, we could also specify which gears we do use, if we use anything different from default since I have no problem w/ someone using a different gear if they genuinely prefer it; I would only consider it bad taste for the multi-type gears since providing a character w/ 2 types of shortcuts seems cheap... then again not all shortcuts are created equal so as long as we're honest abt what we use I don't see too much of a problem, like maybe you just have to play Wave bcuz she's so awesome but the speed shortcuts are the best for that stage, sure go ahead! I think fun is more important than anything, I know for my TA runs I was using either Advantage-S/Jet or Cover-P/Eggman (especially for Eggman bcuz his default gear, and most bikes, are really hard on Air)
I'm quite shy though, thank you for the complementRiders is a game I genuinely love playing over and over so I felt it was only natural to really try hard for TA times; I'm watching the Rush TA you shared and it is really satisfying to watch someone play that game so smoothly, I remember not getting very far in the games myself when it first came out so it's like younger me is in awe
I never actually tried Tournament Edition, it looks really fun to play and I've been excited ever since they teased Team Chaotix coming out in the next update; but I also play on console so I personally didn't want 2 versions of the same game that ran differently if I was practising TAs
I'm totally willing to get back into playing Advance or Rush to also do some competitive times; like you said there's lots of smaller mechanics in games like starting boosts or trick finishers so we could even write "Time Attack Guides" for ppl wanting to TA certain games... hehe -

Huh... never thought about writing a Time Attack Guide... though actually that'd be pretty useful for a game like Advance 2, that game has some weeeeeird routing for the fastest runs. As in, its not always the upper path, and add different characters on top of that and oooohhhh...
That'd take a damn while, but fun as well. Advance 2 is a deep game.
Also
Hoorah! Made her work!
Yeah, no, your time is no joke, I barely got a second off your best lap. That 100 Ring capsule works wonders. I really gotta learn the meat to this game, I can't really tell the difference between characters aside from the shortcuts. -

... Actually, I really should have asked if the 100 Ring capsule was banned first. -

for now, I think going for the 100 Ring Capsule is okay, it's actually really funny bcuz in Sand Ruins it's easy to clip off the ramp trying to do a trick to get to the 100 Ring Capsule and leave you with a C Rank, total run killer; so I just try to collect as many rings as I can along the track
although not my best looking run, I did beat my lap time and my best time for Sand Ruins using Eggman & Cover-P!
edit: decided to quickly upload it to YT, I'm not familiar w/ my recording software at the moment
by the way, hitting record and attempting to do a good run makes me so anxious, I have almost 10 recordings of me messing up so much

Heh... nice Whisper Youtube avatar
Y'know, I was considering making a whole separate channel for posting my TAs, yeah, but I actually wanna keep a second channel for future plans outside of anything Sonic related, so having a playlist of unlisted videos will have to do.
And believe me, buddy. I only do one take but I have to cut off like an hour of footage... mostly caused by clipping through that damn ramp...
And... wow, that time hits pretty darn close to mine, and good maneuvering on the shifting bridge, I can't get past that consistently for the life of me. I actually had no idea about that Power shortcut near the crossbow, too.
Eggy's a deceitfully fast one, ain't he? That aforementioned friend of mine I was TAing Tournament Edition with was using him and making me absolutely eat dirt. Like, its a racing game so of course he's gonna be fast, but you'd expect Dr. Eggman to be some slow gimmicky character because he can only ride bikes, not actually viable stuff. Shouldn't have underestimated bikes, I guess.
Again, really makes me wonder how much character stats matter or just... he's a popular pick because he's Eggman. Nameless Friend is an Eggman fan after all.
