• The Sonic Dark Ages

  There were a short period of time during the mid to late 2000s that Sega lost their groove, cranking out Sonic games that were either mediocre to terrible. This was dubbed the Dark Ages of Sonic games. In your opinion, which game did you believe was the start of darkness? Were there any good games during this time? Did you pull out your hair in frustration? 
  
  I believe that Shadow the Hedgehog was the catalyst, it unfortunately followed the trend that almost every platformer followed...being dark and edgy. Ironic really lol This game was just the taste to come, and it is such a shame how the other games fared during this time.

  I honestly wouldn't even call it the dark age. While a few were bad. A lot of them were pretty good like the Rush games, Unleashed, Riders, the Olympic games, Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing, Secret Rings, and '06 (alright, those last two people may consider terrible but in my eyes they are pretty decent). I'm gonna be a rebel and say that the Dark Age started with Colors. While it was a fine game, it began the trend of Sonic's poor writing and only focusing on Comedy. It's either Colors as the start of the Dark Age or Sonic Free Riders.

  I see, I get what you are saying, SOnic colors on the Wii was the beginning of terrible dialog that makes me cringe, ugh....

  Colors had great gameplay though. But yes, thats when they got scared to do a proper story. That worked in Generations but other games could have done deeper stories.
  
  A lot of people like to cite that era for terrible games but they always forget that the handheld games continued on getting good reception from critics and fans. Advance and Rush were great even if the console counterparts weren't great.

  The only Handheld Sonic game i can think that was terrible was The Dark Brotherhood. I never played it, but I can see why everyone who played it thought it was garbage. But you have a point, it seems that the consoles were not doing too well while the handheld games mostly prospered. I thought that the Olympic games did alright, but that was about it as far as i was concerned, the rest between that time was bad, and 06 was possibly the peek of it. Thank goodness for Unleashed.

  I think the thing about the bad games in the Dark Ages is that they had something that modern games don't. They had heart to them. While they were indeed failures, they still had a lot of love put into them. Even Sonic '06 they put heart to it but they were just constrained by time.
