The Future of the series Discussion
Zamau > 10-10-2018, 10:03 AM
Over the years the Sonic series has had it's moments, some good and many bad. So far there has been only two great games of the franchise Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations. To me Sonic Forces was a good game, but that's just my own opinion. Sonic Mania was also a good game, but to me that's the series going backwards. Some games in the series may still have a cult following. Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric, Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2006. The majority of reviews for those games weren't good, but I guess they will still have some fans.
I hope the Sonic series will get good again, see the success as it did with Colours and Generations. How do you think the future of the series will be? -

You see for you Mania is the series going backwards but for me that is how the series should be, a revisit to the 2D classic Sonic games for me is where the series should go.
Face it ever since Sonic has entered the third dimension its been controversial.
Granted the classic series had its hiccups especially in Sonic 1 but most of its lessons were learned from the latter games.
3D Sonic just tries to reinvent the wheel each time with new gimmicks that have fallen flat to many.
For me the only good 3D game made in the new era is Generations as it took the gameplay that made Sonic Colors and unleashed but fleshed them out and made it fun.
But if you look at how the games have been received post Sonic Heroes its no wonder why this franchise has gone into the toilet.
I think going back to basics is what Sonic needs, 3D Sonic is tainted by a vast array of mediocre or bad games.
From Shadow the Hedgehog (game) to Sonic 06 to the mixed Sonic unleashed not to mention most of the games exclusive to the Wii featuring motion controls not everyone likes and you have a recipe of a franchise poisoned by bad decisions and terrible gameplay.
Forces was the nail in the coffin for modern sonic.
I say leave 3D sonic rest, let the mania crew take over.
Mania isnt going backwards, its going forwards to a better future where sonic is loved again and not just a meme to laugh at. -

Sonic and the Secret Rings and Sonic and the Black Knight were the only games on the Wii what had motion controls. Out of the two though, Sonic and the Black night had better controls. I always play Sonic Colours with the GameCube controller, if Secret Rings and Black Knight had that option, I guess they would've done a lot better. Also maybe I shouldn't said Sonic Mania is the series going backwards because it's still a good game, and it's not the only franchise that went back to 2D for some games.
But what I don't understand is the dislike towards the 3D Sonic games now. They have glitches and bugs, but what make them less than the Sonic Adventure games? I don't think Sonic Forces deserves the hate it gets. As in gameplay how it any different to any other 3D Sonic game? I think the gameplay has improved a lot in games since Sonic Unleashed. I don't mind new 2D Sonic game, but I also hope there we be new 3D Sonic games. -

Forces suffers from lazy level design, over reliance on the boost formula and a terrible storyline.
There is nothing that forces did that was not done better in generations or mania.
In fact its worse, its a downgrade in terns of how easy it is to zip through levels and beat the game in under 3 hours.
And while yes both generations and mania are not long either both have actual challenge in them and actual gameplay.
As for why the 3D games are looked down upon for so many is simple.
Starting with Adventure we have bad camera controls
In adventure 2 we have badly designed levels (especially later on in the game)
Heroes has a lot of baggage needing to play as several teams to beat the game, and not all teams are good (team rose sucks so bad!)
Shadow the hedgehog (game) needs to be replayed so many times it becomes boring after a while
Then Sonic 06 is a trainwreck
Sonic unleashed is much better but the werehog stages are stupid (and the werehog itself is such a stupid idea)
Then you have motion controlled wii exclusive games that not everyone likes.
Then there are the riders games which range from actually decent to downright terrible
Colors is good but again its a exclusive, i really wish sega would re release it on more systems with a HD remix (a good use for the newer engine they have for sonic forces if they dont make a new game for a while. Too bad this probably wont happen as Lizuka is a idiot.)
Generations is again the best 3D sonic game hands down as everything works
But Sega screwed it up again with Lost world and Forces.
Lost world is a mario galaxy clone and no charm of its own, and forces art best is mediocre. -

I do agree that Sonic Forces was easy, even on the hard difficulty. But as for getting through the stages too quickly I have no problem with that. Some of the stages get longer towards the end of the game though. And Sonic game are not long games. In the first Adventure game you had seven separate stories to go though, each one wasn't long. I guess the only long Sonic game is Sonic Chronicles, since it's an RPG. As for the future games, I wouldn't mind if they will be either 2D or 3D instead of having both dimensions in the same game. -

Yeah but there is no reward in forces, at least in mania I feel rewarded.
Forces is so flat in its execution -

There were rewards, but it was just new items for your character. I didn't like that they made Super Sonic DLC in Sonic Forces. Although it was free, I thought it was better that you had to get the Chaos Emeralds in the earlier games through the special stages or through the levels, then you could be Super Sonic. I hope that returns in future games. -

A lot of this is revisionist. Yeah the Adventure games did have glitches and instances where the camera was bad but not very often. In fact they were highly praised at the time of release and got the highest ratings of any Sonic game ever. They don't have the polish of games these days but many 3D games of the 90s didn't. -

The Sonic Adventure games on the Dreamcast probably were reviewed highly. I didn't play the games until I got a GameCube, and I think they weren't that well reviewed. It seems the haven't been since they have been re-released. Also Sonic Adventure DX on the GameCube and other re-releases of the game, didn't do as well as Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. Although I think the first Sonic Adventure is the better game.
