We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.
  
  "For 24 years, we have strived to deliver the best gaming experience to our fans by providing a uniquely PlayStation perspective. Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform.
  This represents a major policy change for SIE, and we are now in the planning process across the organization to support this change. We will update the community once we have more details to share, including more specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles going forward."

  Just saw this. I wonder what they did to work an agreement, there’s gotta be some background stuff that they worked on. I’d also like to point out they already had crossplay with PC and mobile.

  Sony didn't do anything, They were the ones refusing to let it happen despite both the creators and player base asking for it.

  So they just changed their stance on it and they did nothing? Obviously they did something. They probably worked with Epic on the backend so they could have it work in a way they wanted. Either that or firmware 6.0 had something to do with it.

  But either way it was overdue. It’s not something I care about though and probably won’t ever care for but it definitely is good for those with friends who don’t have a system you own.

  I hope crossplay is just done in all online games in the near future. If the technology is there, I don't see why companies would not implement this feature. It only strengthens the lasting power of the game and could help get other people into it if it has a strong online community that lasts.

  For most games I couldn’t care less but niche games like King of Fighters XIV, Fighting Layer EX, and lots of other small games it would be nice so the player base wouldn’t dry up so fast.
  
  It seems they only do it for popular games though which is quite lame!

  It almost feels like the statement was written in a way that players should be grateful that they've stopped being pig-headed and stubborn about cross-play. Which they should, but not in a congratulatory way. Every day they fought against it was them flushing PR down the toilet. Am I glad it's finally being considered? Sure. But this shouldn't have been an issue in the first place
