I already made a classic Sonic games topic, but it might be best to talk about these classic games in their own topics. Since there is already a topic about the first Sonic game, this one is about the sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Unlike the first Sonic game, where I thought the one on the Master System was better. I think the better version of Sonic 2 was on the Mega Drive, although the Master System version is still a good game.
Anyway Sonic 2 improved a lot over the first game, the gameplay was better, as this was the first game where Sonic got the spindash. This was also the first game where Tails made his debut, so you could play the game as Sonic or Tails or Sonic and Tails. This was also this was the first sonic game, where you could have two players, either in split screen or player 2 can play as the Tails in the main game.
Also Super Sonic was first in this game, as there were seven Chaos Emeralds in this game. Getting the Chaos Emeralds wasn't easy either, as you had to go through the Special Stages. Even I never got all the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 2, I think the Special Stages were better than the ones in Sonic 1.
I thought the levels were better in this game, and there were more of them. Although there is one level that is my least favourite, and that's Metropolis Zone. It goes on for ages and there are 3 acts, but the badniks are the worst part of this level.
After Metropolis Zone, you go Sky Chase, Wing Fortress and Death Egg Zone. At least the final three levels only have one act, but they can be challenging especially Death Egg Zone where you fight Silver Sonic and the Death Egg Robot. The final boss in Sonic 2 is tough, but it's one of my favourite final bosses, from the classic Sonic games.

It was my first game and I love it but it's a shame how much got cut out of it due to deadlines. It lost a several levels, time travel, and and overworld map showing all of the zones. It'd be cool if someone were to hack this and add all of the original stuff back with a hand drawn overworld map to select your zone and call it Sonic 2: The Lost Archives or something. @ -

I like the idea of a new Sonic 2 with the added cut levels. I didn't know time travel was originally going to be in Sonic 2, I guess they saved that for Sonic CD. I guess the 2 player mode got added after because weren't the 2 player themes of Emerald Hill, Casino Night and Mystic Cave Zone from those cut levels? I think you could also listen to the Sonic 2 version the Hidden Palace Zone theme, through the sound test. -

Sonic 2 was my first game and introduction to gaming in general so it will always hold a special place in my heart. I still have my original copy and box up on display with my other stuff. I'll have to take a pic of it sometime.
It was better than Sonic 1, but also I wish it would've had a save system. However, since that was introduced in S3 it's not a huge deal. Music was great, art was great. I really liked the challenge but I always remember getting to Wing Fortress before losing all my continues. Damn bottomless pits.
I also enjoyed the half-pipe special stages. (Probably an unpopular opinion). I just loved the music to them, honestly. There are things from the prototype I wish they would've kept like him hitting a wall and falling backward. That was cute.
**As for Sonic CD, it was originally intended to be an enhanced port of Sonic 2 with better graphics, fully orchestrated soundtrack, extra levels, cutscenes, the works. But Yuji Naka split with his team and went to STI since he was unhappy and started to create Sonic 2 for the genesis and Naoto Ohshima was left in Japan to head that team to work on the port. Well, the sales of S2 in Japan weren't that great and the team had a separate vision so they completely redesigned the port and turned it into Sonic CD. -

I thought the special stages in Sonic 2 were good, an improvement over the ones on Sonic 1 on the Mega Drive. But I have never got all seven Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 2. So I got Super Sonic by using the sound test code. -

It took a lot of trial and error to get the emeralds in S2 but I managed it. However, now I love to use the cheat codes. I have them memorized, LOL. I mean, I did beat the game legit beforehand but messing around in debug mode is so much fun.

The first time I fully completed Sonic 2 was when it was it was released for the Nintendo DS as it was part of the Sonic Classic Collection, as you could save your game, and it was Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. -
