  This is.... interesting. I think Sonic probably is already more popular or just as popular due to the movie, comics, and mobile games but I don't think they will ever get their games to rival it in sells again. It would take many many games at more than just above average, they'd have to be masterpieces and I just don't see that ever happening.
  
  Even Frontiers which has sold really well compared to other games in recent history hasn't sold really that much.

  I think they can do it if they keep pumping out lots of media that kids like.

  Maybe. They'd have to really up the quality of their games and really market the heck out of the new Knuckles show, Sonic Movie, and Comic series. Heck, probably finding new avenues to break into markets they aren't in now too. It would take quite a push to surpass Mario.

  I don't think they'll be able to rival Nintendo again. Especially with how empty Frontiers was, and how a lot of people got onto Sega for that.

  I really liked Frontiers and enjoyed it more than other recent 3D games but I agree with you. It has a long way to go but if they could manage to get a Sonic game out that reviewed as highly as a Mario game, I could see it doing much better but it would take several games like that for the audience to build up.

  I would love for Sonic to be more popular than Mario again, but it's going to take a lot of work to get there. Unfortunately since Sonic seems to get a bad rep when it comes to some gaming journalists and reviewers, the franchise isn't in the best spot right now to be able to rival against Mario.

  Maybe not against Mario but I feel the franchise is the strongest it has been since the 90s. The movies were huge successes and the TV show is also very popular.
