It really feels like we’re close to a release date for Sonic Origins, the classic game compilation designed to celebrate Sonic’s 30th Anniversary. Overnight, details on the title were published (and subsequently leaked) on the Australian PlayStation Store, confirming some key information about how the 16-Bit games will be treated – including new animations, new areas to explore and missions to complete!
Key Art pulled from the Australian PSN Store for Sonic Origins
“Relive the classic collected adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD in the newly remastered Sonic Origins,” reads the title’s description. “From the iconic Green Hill Zone to the treacherous Death Egg Robot, you’ll speed down memory lane to thwart the sinister plans of Doctor Robotnik in polished high definition!”
Here’s where things get super interesting. The rest of the description reads, “this latest version includes new areas to explore, additional animations, and a brand new Anniversary mode!”
The game page details continue to outline that not only will Sonic 1, 2, 3, Knuckles and CD all receive resolution improvements, but each title will include new opening and ending animations, as well as new areas for players to discover.
Additionally, a Mission mode will challenge fans to complete certain tasks and be rewarded with coins (not rings?) which can be spent in the Museum to unlock archive material. We’re hoping that the material in question is substantial and not the limited range of art we’ve come to expect thanks to past Sonic Mega/Gems Collections.
Finally, each game will be available in either Classic mode (which comes in original resolution and limited lives) or Anniversary mode (which offers fullscreen resolution and unlimited lives). Hopefully there’s a way to enjoy the fullscreen resolution elements while still including a challenge for old-school fans!
So, it sounds like Sonic Origins is shaping up to be something exciting! It’s not been confirmed exactly who’s behind the remastering of these titles, but given the above we have a few ideas… Hopefully SEGA will announce the release very soon.
