They've gotten a case of the swollen head lately just like they were with the PS2 so it wouldn't surprise me at all that they would ask for that high a price and just expect the fans to fall in line.
Eh I don't think there's any evidence of that. With the PS2 and especially PS3 they didn't care about developers and just expected them to make games for them. With PS4 they actually care about developers by making it easy for them to work on their platform and helping out smaller indies.
$499 is a lot though. $399 in today's money is only $433 with inflation so it still is a bit more than 2013 even considering inflation. It all depends on what they actually include with the box. They have a tough decision to face. Make it $399 and it won't be all that powerful but $499 might be too much unless it's a beast and they have lots of games for it.
I think going the route Nintendo did by making a bunch of Wii U games available for Switch was a good idea so if they have lots of PS4 games on PS5(or those PS4 games get a PS5 patch) that's a good way to give it a healthy launch line up.
