Quote:In Team Sonic Racing you race as part of a team of three. While your individual finishing position in the race is recorded, it's a team that wins, based on the amount of points they've accrued (awarded based on each member's finishing position) rather than the individual player. It means that you could come first, but if your teammates come 11th and 12th, then your team's probably coming last overall. The team is everything: leaving your friends behind is penalised more heavily than losing a few positions yourself.
I got to play a little of Team Sonic Racing's story mode campaign, which was a little light on narrative depth but did offer some reasons to play. The plot of the game basically seems to be that a mysterious stranger invited Sonic and his friends to a big car racing competition, with the winning racer being allowed to keep their car as a prize. It's all a bit suspect: you can see from the start something's up. The narrative of a kart game isn't enormously crucial, of course, but it's nice that there's at least something pulling forward story mode progression.
Quote:Derek Littlewood, studio design director at Sumo, agrees. "I don't think the market for great karting games has ever gone away," he tells me. "I think part of the success we had with a game like [Sonic & All Stars Racing] Transformed was … because it was a cracking game, but it was also because those people were there, and they wanted that game. And they didn't have Nintendo systems and they weren't playing Mario Kart. [Transformed] did really well on Nintendo systems as well, which just says even those people who are playing Mario Kart are still saying, 'I want more of this.'"
Team Sonic Racing - Official Trailer | Of course, each game offers different flavours, and Team Sonic Racing's distinguishing features offer a surprising amount of depth. The game is centered around team play--even if you play alone, you're put into a team with two other Sonic heroes. Each team member contributes to a shared ultimate meter, which when filled can be activated to accelerate your team and sharpen up their handling. You fill the ult meter by performing team-oriented actions, such as helping them up when they spin out--passing close to them will get them back in the race more quickly--or slipstreaming behind teammates to gain a small boost.
This focus, Sumo says, was decided by Sonic Team head Takashi IIzuka, who wanted a game he could play with his kids where they could all contribute to a shared success. Littlewood, however, says Team Sonic Racing isn't just family-friendly fodder: "I think the unique thing that the team play allows us to do is make the game more accessible for less skilled players, because you can play with someone who is better than you at the game, and they can help you be better at it, rather than you always competing with each other. But at the same time, we've added a lot of depth to the different team actions and team play in general that allow high-level players to get more out of it."E3 2018

The reason I say that is because, yes it's going off of the previous style which is good but can be really bad since they are since it's a new formula which means more testing, which is probably what delayed it, but it's good because it will then stand out from the crowd, and the fact that they are using the wisps is annoying because I wish they would realize that the wisps were cool in one game...but after that we weren't supposed to see them...ever...not in the next( btw generations doesn't count, sense it just remade a level that was from the source material, so I'm talking about lost world and forces mainly)
