  It really isn't, when you think about it. I've seen and heard from quite a few people who feel validated by the company's decision to change the design and who feel like they were listened to; those same people have also expressed how they're actually going to see the movie when it comes out now. To the poor animators the redesign meant hours of long work, but to the shareholders it meant a lot of potential new revenue. It does feel a little bit like the whole 'New Coke' thing on some level. There's no way anyone on the animation team was 100% happy with the original design. And usually if you have to ask "what were they thinking?", there's probably a good financial reason.
  
  I might be reading too much into it though.

  still you dont invest in that kind of money on a movie you know may flop, Paramount may have hurt themselves here.

  I thought the latest trailer of the Sonic movie looked really good, and there were some part's of the trailer I thought were a bit funny too. I think Jim Carry is going to be great as Dr Robotnik and the redesign of Sonic in the film, is a big improvement. Green Hill Zone at the beginning of the trailer looked very good, I wonder if there are going to be anymore levels in the film, since towards the end of the trailer it looked like Sonic was going warp to Sandopolis Zone. Anyway I might see Sonic movie when it gets released.

  Was it a knee jerk reaction though? It took a lot of convincing that the design was going to be poorly accepted. They had Sega telling them they didn't like the design and to change it and they didn't listen. I believe I remember hearing about others saying they should change it and they still didn't. It wasn't until it was HEAVILY downvoted on Youtube and fans/non fans all over saying how disgusting it looked for them to go back and change it.
  
  As for the trailer, it's Aces in my book. I'm loving the design of Sonic and I love how Sonic and Dr Robotnik are characterized. Carrey does a good job of portraying Dr. Robotnik as he is seen in other media such as TV/Comics. Sonic is that cocky free spirit he usually is. I see it being a good movie for fans/kids. Adults who aren't fans may not like it though.

  Well according to new information (found here), it didn't cost them nearly as much as people assumed it did.

  This pretty much lines up with what I figured was going on, and I wouldn't necessarily say it cements the idea that the design was done to gauge reactions, but it certainly supports it.

  Its still one hell of a gamble as the movie can still flop, even if the redesign only cost them $5M that is still $5M into a film that could tank.
  From what i read this movie had a 90 Million dollar budget..... now up to 95 million.
  
  That is quite the investment for a film that may not even gain back half of its budget not to mention the need to create new promotion materials like posters.
  I mean the movie the 13th warrior cost its studio Touchtone (Disney) 100 million dollars yet it had the worst return making only $65 million
  In retrospect Solo: A star wars story the lowest grossing Star wars movie ever still made up for its production budget
  So did the 2016 Ghostbusters movie
  
  95 million is not pocket change to a movie studio.

  If this was all a marketing stunt, either if it costed 35 or 5 million dollars, it definately was an extremely expensive stunt nevertheless!
  Still, in some frames, the CGI in Sonic feels like needs some polishing. So I propose a different idea:
  
  Paramount knew the original design for the movie was ugly, but it was too late to redesign it without taking some extra time. They worked on a new, more cartoony look for Sonic but showed the original trailer nonetheless, already expecting a poor reception. "But it's Sonic" they might have thought "it will become viral, so let's take the advantage and keep working".
  Then jeff Fowler announces that they would remake the character design, a new release date and BOOM, overall reaction becomes more possitive for a second trailer.

  That's another equally feasible theory that I've discussed with a few people. Regardless of motivation I'm almost certain the original design was never intended to be what they were going to go with in the end.

  It's important to understand that, when an initial trailer for a film first drops, while principle photography may be complete, work on visual effects, soundtrack, and reshoots will still be going on for many months yet. The final cut of a film is usually complete only weeks before its release date. So I doubt they had animated the entire film with the original design by the time the original trailer dropped on April 30. I imagine they had animated enough for a trailer and not much more.
  
  In any case, whatever the state of Sonic's design at the time of the initial trailer, I'm glad they pushed the release date back in order to take their time on a better character model, and a better trailer for that matter. I found the original trailer vaguely amusing, but Gangsta's Paradise was tonally weird for a Sonic film, and I could not get over that Sonic design. I didn't think it was as horrifying as some people, but it just didn't look like Sonic. One of the things that really benefits a movie based on a popular franchise is a sense of authenticity and respect for the source material (look at the Marvel movies), which fans will appreciate.
  
  That first design didn't seem to do that, and it made the movie feel like nothing more than a cynical cash grab by a studio that cared more about getting those family dollars than it did being a decent adaptation of a beloved franchise with a large (and vocal) fandom. And don't get it twisted, that is definitely still the case; Paramount is a large cooperation, obligated to make a profit to its shareholders, not to make art that fans will appreciate. But I think they may have finally learned from their experience with the Transformers franchise that, if you make a reasonable effort to appeal to the fans, it will pay dividends (see Bumblebee) and you'll get not only those family dollars, but fan dollars, too. And what corporation doesn't want All the Money in the World?
  
  (Of course, I am talking about the cynical, profit-driven overlords behind every major corporation here, not the artists who actually do the work to make the film go. I do genuinely believe that those folks want to do a good job that will be enjoyed by existing fans as well as casual viewers. But I digress.)
  
  That second trailer is so much better, in pretty much every way. Now I'm actually quite excited about the film and will definitely go to see it. I'm trying to manage my expectations, though. After all, it may well be hot garbage. Then again, I did really enjoy Bumblebee.
