I'm someone who thoroughly enjoyed sonic riders when it first released and I still enjoy it to this day, there's a bit of a learning curve when it comes to knowing how to do tricks for shortcuts (like which direction to tilt the stick, either to go further, or to go higher) and the game does a poor job at teaching the player, the option for the tutorial isn't even on the main menu, you're just able to jump right into the game without knowing much beforehand - but I think the game is also simple enough that after a few races, even without the tutorial, you'll be able to understand how some mechanics work like turbulence and boosting
sonic riders is worth putting the time into learning and mastering its mechanics, even though I said the system is simple but it's one of those games where the simplicity benefits it. there's mechanics that have come about bcuz of it's simple system like chain boosting, and there's different gears, some with huge differences in how you play the game (like auto drifting, or giving power/fly characters the ability to grind) giving it some replayablity on top of that
unfortunately sonic riders on ps2 isn't as great as it's gamecube iteration, the game felt much more different to play on ps2 and the CPU players felt like they were cheating at times (kind of like how in double dash, items that are too far away from you, the player, don't even affect CPUs that drive over them!) and not all shortcuts are created equal in the game, power-types have the better shortcuts in stages when they can just punch through all the obstacles but there's some grind rails for speed types that amp your speed to 400 (the cap is just a bit over 200!)
I also like that sonic riders had the "2 stories" route like in SA2, where you play through sonic & co's story and then you unlock the babylon rogues' story, which is the same events but from a different perspective. that different perspective also sheds some light on some cool story telling like wave's rivalry w/ tails and how eggman was behind everything (no one is surprised...)
the gamecube version of sonic riders is definitely the best out of all 3 versions of the game if you're ever willing to try the game out, I don't have much to say abt zero gravity which is a shame bcuz I remember being so excited for the game when it came out, I like that they tried to do more with the world and story w/ the babylon rogues but it wasn't as interesting as the first game, but basically a new set of "relics" is the sudden cause of problems that eventually lead to the possible end of the world and everyone has to team up to stop it! the game also entirely retooled the way gears work, most likely in a way to balance the game out more but all the interesting things you could do with tricks and shortcuts were pretty much lost, the most that's interesting is shortcuts can be done with the new gravity mechanic, but the tricks are simplified to a single button-press and nothing else really.
... I don't want to get into free riders either, it's an unfortunate mess of a game with absolutely no charm
all in all sonic riders was a really cool, both in the art and aesthetic, and in the idea of "sonic and friends riding on hover boards and air skates" it was so...
sonic. and I'm glad the extreme gears are still being used and referenced in sonic media outside of the games
