I remember back in the day almost EVERY game had built in cheats from the developers. You typed in a code and it either gave you access to items that made the game easier(items/level skip/etc) or it unlocked wacky modes that made the game completely different or unrealistic. For example GTA had cheats to allow you to drive on water. Slowly games started using them less and then they almost completely were gone. Now days there are very few that actually have them. I miss developers coming up with creative cheats in games. Anyone else miss the days of cheats? Now days instead of cheats you pretty much have to pay for items that you would have been able to unlock in the game for free before.

I've never been one for cheats myself. Despite owning a Game Genie for the NES, I've never bothered trying it out.

Game Genie and Game Shark did offer even more awesome stuff to do too! In GTA San Andreas I remember Game Shark let you completely remove all water so you could drive down at the bottom of the ocean or flood the whole city and drive your boats around town. More like hacking the game than cheating actually.

Games today make you pay for dlc to unlock what cheats used to.

Ugh... Modern gaming sucks in that aspect! I remember you could use cheats to unlock characters in Tony Hawk and several games. Now you have dlc for extra characters.

Cheat codes were definitely fun to mess around with, especially with games like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the debug mode. I had tons of hours of enjoyment as a kid just messing around with that.
On the topic of unlockables, I kind of miss unlockables like unlockable characters and stages in general. Many games nowadays have little to no unlockables like that. Nowadays, anything like that is DLC usually which is a darn shame.
