I've been playing the original Sonic the Hedgehog a lot lately, the iPhone version being the latest. I was late to playing the first Sonic game, receiving it for Christmas in the form of Sega Smash Pack on Dreamcast, later received it via Sonic Mega Collection, and the GBA port known as Sonic Genesis.
I have this game on most of my game systems, which is fine since it is one of my favorite Sonic games and I enjoy playing it. Yes as unpopular of an opinion it is, even the GBA port, despite its problems, I still like being able to play Sonic 1 on the go back then. My 3DS has Sonic 1, my DS has it on Sonic Classic Collection, Virtual Console on Wii, I have it on Steam, and more recently Switch via the Sega Ages line of games and the iPhone version. The latter two being my favorite versions of the classic.
Wondering how many copies or versions of the original Sonic game do you own? -

It's the least owned one I have but I have it in Mega Collection Plus and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.
How's the 3D effect in the 3DS version? -

How's the 3D effect in the 3DS version?
I like the 3D in the 3DS version. The 3D works in layers. You have Sonic and the level itself, then another layer for stuff in the background, then another layer for more stuff in the background and so on. When you turn the 3D on, objects shift a bit in the background allowing you to see a tiny bit more. It's a cool effect.
3D has two settings, you can have fall in, which makes 3D works in the background more, or pop-out which allows the 3D to pop out more. Recently replaying it, I like the pop-out more. There's even a "classic" filter that makes the game look like it's played off an old TV, but I haven't noticed if 3D affects it. -

I'd like to try it on the 3DS sometime. I like the first one but it's probably my least favorite of the originals. Although I do like how later levels aren't about speed and pure platforming, those levels get HARD. -

They also gave the same treatment to Sonic 2 with similar 3D effects. Yeah, the later levels can be pretty challenging. I still find it surprising I rarely have problems with Labyrinth Zone nowadays, even the boss section climbing upwards and avoiding those spikes that pop in and out. -

I've honestly lost count of how many versions we have.
I do have the Sega Genesis Mini, and when I bought Sonic Mania on PC it came with a free version of Sonic 1 as a "consolation prize" because they were taking longer for the PC version to come out. We have it for the Game Cube and if you want to get a little old school, Sonic Jam for the Sega Saturn. I also have the DS collection as well, with Sonic 1, 2, and Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles/Sonic 3 and Knuckles.
I'll happily update the list if I think of any more, this is just off the top of my head. -

I owned Sonic 1 for the genesis, Saturn (Sonic Jam), Gamecube (Mega Collection), for PC (from a Steam Collection), for Android, and for Ipod Nano. :p -

I got an iPod nano rather late, so I think I missed out on the iPod version of the original game. I do remember reading about it at the time, I think it was Apple's website.
Speaking of Sonic ports, they did reveal awhile back Sonic 1 is coming to Tesla cars. I find it amusing I can say "they ported Sonic 1 to a car," lol.
