Of the original trilogy, what is you favorite first level? Is there any one in particular that you think just is the stand out best or maybe it's a very very close call? -

I have a soft spot for Emerald Hill since Sonic 2 is my favorite. BUT Angel Island is probably the superior one. I think it does a great job explaining how the game works and introduces the shields and water (water especially was something the first two games failed to explain to the player well.). The environment also changes as you go through the zone which I find to be very neat. -

Pretty much agree with Infinite. Angel Island is probably the best, though Sonic 2 is my favorite game so I am sort of biased for Emerald Hill. Though Green Hill is definitely the most Iconic of the three.
I always enjoyed getting the new games and seeing what is essentially its own iteration of Green Hill, but now it seems every game they make has Green Hill now... -

Yeah I'm kinda sick of Green Hill with how much they've reiterated it. Yeah, it's iconic but way overdone. I personally feel Emerald Hill is an improvement on Green Hill in most every way. That may be a bit of bias as Sonic 2 was my first and I didn't play the first one till after 3 came out. -

Definitely Emerald Hill for me. My introduction to the series was the Sonic 2 on Megadrive/Genesis and so that opening level carries some nostalgic weight for me, but I also generally think it was a well paced level. Quick and easy for those experienced, but large and exploratory for those new and adventurous! I'd say Angel Island is a close second though, as it adds the stage variations between acts 1 and 2, as well as the smooth transitions and mini-bosses! -

Ya that game was my introduction to Sonic also, as well as gaming in general so it definitely does have nostalgia for me. I think it has a much nicer look than Green Hill and better layout plus it doesn't over stay its welcome. -

Yes that is another fair point, not overstaying it's welcome. More so that just brings to mind the heavy feeling of three act zones from Sonic 1. I'm supremely glad they did away with that. But one thing that tends to drag Green Hill Zone down as well for many of us, is Sega's insistence to keep it recurring over and over and over again. And it's a bummer, because on the whole, it's a fantastic zone, but I think most fans are burned out on it now. It was cool I'd say up to when they brought it back for Sonic Adventure 2 in 3-D. If any stage deserved to step foot into 3-D first, it was Green Hill. BUT, that should have been it, at least for a long time. And they also shouldn't have kept trying to mirror the atmosphere of it in so many later games. Some levels where that occurs, while not Green Hill, FEEL so close to it that it is practically a rehash. Just goes to show, you can have too much of a good thing. I'm sure the same could be said if it were Emerald Hill or Angel Island that were getting constantly thrown into new releases. It's unfair to Green Hill and I hope they pull back on that as the years proceed. -

Yeah in SA2 I was extremely excited about replaying Green Hill in 3D but I had to download a 100% save because I couldn't get all the emblems. Haha
I would love Emerald Hill being remade.

Oh yeah, same. I used the Action Reply to unlock it! It was worth it, since I had 0 skill to achieve it properly! haha
And yes a 3D Emerald Hill would be exciting!
