Are there any fan games I need to be aware of? Fan games that AREN'T Classic Sonic clones/hacks? I'm looking for fan games that do something different.
Sure, I'd like 3D Sonic fan games or Modern Sonic fan hacks, but I want a game that either breaks the mold or tries to evolve the formula. Is there anything like this? Yeah, I would like to make one myself, but all I can do is write.

You've probably already heard about this one already, but first and foremost, I'd suggest Sonic Robo Blast 2. It has a unique gameplay and visual style that sets it apart from the crowd, and it also has loads of mods created by the community, which offer an insane amount of replayability.
Now, apart from that, Sonic Time Twisted also comes to mind as a fangame that switches some stuff up.
The difficulty with suggesting Sonic fangames is that very few are complete, and many are cancelled before significant work is done on them. If you're fine with something short, I've heard Sonic Rush 3D is also really good, but at the moment it only has one level completed. -

I'm joking. But in all seriousness, Sonic World is probably something I'd recommend. Just be aware, if you have a potato PC, this thing will run on 6 frames per second. -

I have heard of it, but what's keeping me from playing it (besides the Classic Sonic focus and aesthetic) is the control scheme, since it's a Doom mod. I just don't see how anyone can play a Sonic game like that.

It's a Classic Sonic fan game, and again, I'm trying to avoid those.

Too true. Mine isn't even off the ground.

People call it a "DOOM mod", but it's more that it uses the DOOM engine, as you can play it standalone without needing a DOOM WAD.
And the game actually controls like a dream, it has to be one of the most accurate adaptations of Genesis Sonic physics by far. Though it unfortunately does have a speedcap on groundspeed, but you can change that with a mod.
... Speaking of. The absolutely huge modding scene for this game. Characters, maps both standalone and collections, visual changes, physics tweaks, whole gameplay additions. There's a lot.
Right, but the game is recommended to be played with a keyboard, which I know is a downside for some people. And if you are playing with a keyboard, you have to manually change the camera settings in the options menu since they're default set for controller camera and it's kind of disorienting to play with that while on keyboard. -

How about SLAYBELLS? It has a lot of references to SAGE, and NO Sonic characters. (At least from my memory.)
