Hey there!
So yeah, June is right around the corner. As a gamer, I know exactly what that means.
E3 is almost here!
So, what is E3? For the uninitiated, E3 stands for Electronic Entertainment Expo and Business Summit. It's where game developers come to showcase new and upcoming stuff in the realm of gaming and all electronic entertainment.
As we all know, last year brought everything to a screeching halt, including E3. This was a major downer for us. I mean, an entire year without any gaming news? Do not want.
But it wasn't all bad. There was the New Game Plus expo that attempted to fill the void, so to speak. However, that's for another thread. This one's all about E3.
Feel free to chat about past E3's, predictions for upcoming ones (2021 marks the first time that it has decided to go virtual) and overall thoughts about it.
So, I guess I'll start.
My first time seeing anything about E3 was in 2005. I was in 8th grade at the time, and didn't have any kind of access to the internet like I do now. We did get to use the computers in the classroom to do various things and for me, that meant a lot of going to Nintendo's official website. When I reached that landing page, I saw a banner displaying a countdown to something called E3. I didn't know what it was, but was interested. I spent all of my time on that computer just gleaning info about this thing. When I found out that it was all about new games, I wanted more.
And more I got. In 2006, I finally gotten access to cable TV, and a little channel called G4. They had broadcasted various events and E3 was one of them. I was hooked ever since.
So it's you guys/gals/in-between'ers turn. Any memories of E3 you wanna share? Any predictions for this upcoming E3? Share away!

The most attention I actively paid to E3 over the years was content creator coverage from Youtube and Twitch, or articles summarizing what was shown a day or so after. It always looks like a great event, but unless you get to be there and first on the scene, I always feel like the true excitement is just the kernels of updates, so I'm always okay getting the funnel of highlights! hehe
Who all presents at E3 these days? I've heard some of the big dogs are trying to move to hosting their own things as time goes on, changing the landscape with the modern day technology and all that. -

My first E3 was in 2014 with the Nintendo Digital Event. My space in video games was limited to only Nintendo so that digital event was the only part of the conference I actually cared about. I thought it was HILARIOUS thanks to the collaboration with Robot Chicken. Not to mention, when the event was announced, there was a joke about Reggie Fils-A-Mech.
2015 was even better with the Muppets collaborating with Nintendo. It's a shame they aren't as fun nowadays. While the Wii U era wasn't Nintendo's most successful time, they had a really unique charm to it. -

It just isn't the same for me with Sony not there and Nintendo doing their own shows. Not many surprises but it's not all bad, good stuff still comes out of it.
One of the craziest moments I've seen since I started paying attention in 2009 was Sony in 2013 dissing Microsoft for their then stance of charging for used games.

Oh heavens I forgot about that! Yeah, Microsoft almost completely sunk itself that round when they were going to not allow used games to be played, and if I recall they were going to require Kinect to operate the XBox One. They almost lost it all that E3, but thankfully listened to the backlash and made some changes. Had they not, it would be down to Playstation and Nintendo, and with less competition comes less incentive to improve, so we may have had slightly lesser consoles moving forward. -

Lol, I didn't even know PSP arrived in Europe late. Nothing could touch the DS but in the end PSP sold over 80 million. It was the only handheld to go against Nintendo and be pretty successful. But DS was just unstoppable selling 150million. -

It was admirable for Sony to try their hand at the handheld market (pun intended), but for things like handheld, and more gimmick style platforms, Nintendo will always be untouchable. But that's also sort of their niche now. Microsoft and Sony duke it out with powerful hardware and computing power, and Nintendo just goes it's own path off to the side. Credit to them for that, but sometimes it also can bite them VERY HARD. *coughWiiUcough* -

Does Nintendo even announce stuff at E3 anymore? I thought everything was announced at their Directs then E3 is just playing what has been announced.
