DOOM (2016) was a fantastic return to the Doom franchise and was what got me into the franchise as a whole. It won several awards and was, overall, a huge success. It was only natural for Bethesda to have id Software make a sequel to this hit. On March 20, in the lovely, the absolutely perfect year 2020, Doom Eternal was released. It was a HUGE success surpassing its predecessor by selling about 7.5 million copies. Why this game sold so many copies is beyond me. Not like there was something going on during that time that forced people to be stuck inside their houses and have nothing to do while the game happened to release at the right time to do so heh heh heh….
...right?
*ahem* Anyway, not only did it do great money-wise, but it won Best PC Game and Best Action Game in the Game Critics Awards as well as being nominated for Game of the Year, Score and Music, Audio Design, and Action Game. So, should this game be praised for all eternity? Or was it a nightmare?
[b]Story
/b]
After the events of DOOM (2016), Earth has now been invaded by demons from Hell, killing off about 60% of the world’s population. You, the Doom Slayer, must kill the Hell priests and slaughter any demons that come your way.
The story, overall, is quite simple. But, it does seem like there is a lot more story to it than its predecessor. This game features cutscenes containing lore to the Doom Slayer himself and how he became the behemoth he is today. Like 2016, the game contains a ton of lore that you could collect throughout the game and details concerning the demons you face.
However, one of my complaints about the story, however, is the lack of explanation concerning the events between 2016 and Eternal. I feel there were certain elements about the ending in 2016 that weren’t explained in Eternal and it gives me a few questions. I won’t say it here for those who haven’t played 2016.
The characters weren’t explored much in this game either. There were a few appearances from characters but they appear only once never to be seen again. Because of this, the characters seem quite forgettable.
Overall, I’m glad there is more story in Eternal than 2016, but it still feels a bit simple besides backstory and doesn’t explain what happened after the previous game well. I’ll give it an A-.
[b]Gameplay/b]
In Doom Eternal, you slaughter demons using guns, chainsaws, grenades, etc. Each gun has a special use and can be used to exploit weaknesses. Like DOOM (2016), glory kills are basically the finishing move when you fight demons and give you health and ammo. If you are running out of ammo, you can use your chainsaw to easily gain ammo by slicing a demon with it. And just like DOOM (2016)...
I LOVE the gameplay.
It is so fun facing an army of demons and slaughtering every single one in your path. There is a flow when playing this game that makes it so refreshing.
A complaint I had with the previous game was the repetitiveness. You went to one area, slaughtered demons, went to the next area, repeat. Eternal fixes this by adding platforming and a few puzzles and they are great!
There are also so many collectibles. There are lore pieces, music albums, toys, and upgrades. Speaking of upgrades, you can collect items that give you certain perks, mods for your weaponry, and cheats if you’re in a tight spot.
Overall, I absolutely love the gameplay. I give it an A+.
[b]Soundtrack/b]
The soundtrack….oh man do I love the soundtrack. This soundtrack has got to be one of my favorite soundtracks in video games. Songs like “The Only Thing They Fear Is You,” “Meathook,” “Cultist Base,” and “Doom Eternal (Main Menu)” make your demon conquest so much more satisfying. Mick Gordon did another outstanding job with this game. I especially love the metal choir that was included in songs like “Kar En Tuk” and “Icon of Sin.” I give it an A+.
I would also like to mention I like the art style the game has. The environments are stunning and the colors the ammo has makes chainsawing demons surprisingly pretty. Bonus points for the art style.
[b]Conclusion/b]
To conclude, I absolutely love this game. There are a few issues with the story but other than that, it’s one of my favorite first-person shooter games and, if you don’t mind the gore, I would highly recommend it. I give the game a 9.3/10.

Amazingly done there Infinite! Being someone who has yet to play the two newest iterations into the Doom franchise, this certainly makes me crave to give them a spin soon! I always loved the original Doom growing up, and sadly felt the ball got a little dropped with Doom 3, but it sounds like things are fully on point with the 2016 Doom and Doom Eternal and that is just exciting!
