well... it's finally time I chime in to this thread, I really enjoyed the emerald hunting stages of SA2, for some reason I didn't think much of them in SA & DX even though you could track multiple emeralds, I found that more tedious than anything bcuz I would instantly change the direction I was going from one emerald or the other depending on my radar
with SA2 I actually liked how they streamlined it to one emerald at a time, I could focus on one emerald piece and then worry abt the next one, instead of constantly turning around bcuz I'm too far from one piece and suddenly closer to another one. however, I use the multi-emerald mod now when I play SA2 bcuz if I know where one piece is I know where the other 2 are basically. ever since I learnt that the emerald pieces for a majority of the stages aside from meteor herd and mad space, are spaced out in a triangle I can understand where the pieces are without using hints!
for example in the first stage for knuckles, wild canyon, if the 1st emerald isn't pinged right away you know that you should probably head upwards and to either side of the stage, and depending on that ping, then you can head to the 2nd emerald which is mostly like in the lower area, and then once again upwards, it's practically a triangle
pumpkin hill is a great example of this "triangle strategy" bcuz if you go to one of the mountains (pumpkin mountain, church mountain, train mountain) you'll most likely get a ping for one of the pieces if you have the multi-emerald mod on, and then the 2nd piece would be on a different mountain, and then the 3rd piece is either on pumpkin mountain, or somewhere else!
and then for egg quarters, if one key is in the red room, obviously the other 2 keys are gonna be in the other rooms! rouge and knuckles move so quickly on foot that quickly running through stages to find the next ping really isn't tedious to me either, this is where the multi-emerald tracker comes in handy too. another great thing is that if you
are using hints is that websites like
psyoulove.me (this links to the wild canyon stage for knuckles) are reactive to emerald hints, bcuz believe it or not, some hints apply to multiple emerald shards! I think this site is a great too alongside this
SA2B google doc for emerald locations are a great tool for ppl who struggle w/ emerald hunting stages or can't find the
groove for it
one thing that's also really interesting to think about is "free pieces" in stages like aquatic mine, during the cutscene that plays during the hero story of aquatic mine, there'll be some pieces you can see in the opening cutscene regardless of your radar. my experience w/ emerald hunting was thankfully a positive one, bcuz I loved exploring stages and and genuinely learning how to get better at them, I was more into exploring environments and "where everything was" that even the hard mode pieces are interesting to me (which are always the same, every time)
so I hope the things I've said abt emerald stages have ppl look at them in a different light and I encourage ppl to give them another chance! and even try the "triangle strategy" to see how far it gets them
remember, it's an A-rank if it's under a minute or so!
