it's a shame bcuz strategy guides aren't as common as they used to be, half of it is due to how quickly the internet updates while the other half is that games don't
need them to enjoy the experience. think simon's quest on the NES, if you didn't have the guide for that game it was almost impossible to get through the game... the last strategy guide I bought for myself for a
recent game was for mario odyssey and mk8 but I have no idea if any companies really exist anymore for such a market
originally I remember bradygames being a very popular name for strategy guides, which later merged w/ prima games, and it's under the prima games name that the odyssey and mk8 guides that I purchased are published by. I still absolutely love these strategy guides, and any strategy guides I can get my hands on bcuz there's genuinely nothing like a physical book in you hands that you can fold the page corners and add sticky notes all over as you need. I've been using gamefaqs guides for games whenever I can too but the lack of images is definitely a downside, all the screenshots and art that were inside strategy guides were and still are such a treat to me, I absolutely adore physical media w/ all my heart
I wouldn't blame the internet entirely for the downfall of strategy guides though as easy as it would be, there was so much effort that went into these guides aside from simply writing down how to get through areas of a game that all that effort might not be worth investing the resources in to. there were character bios, story lore, maps, and even high quality scans of bonus material like art... the strategy guide itself was another experience aside from the game!
another thing that also doesn't help is that if by some reason information was wrong in a strategy guide, or an online update happened to the game itself in terms of a patch, it was impossible to fix without reprinting it!
but then how would ppl with the old ones get the newer information? the internet and wikis more specifically can be updated at any time and even expanded upon in the chance that dlc for a game comes out, more ppl just dropped physical media so easily it's heartbreaking, really
