I think Spider-Man did it well, although more of an open city then world. Also you could get used to the controls very quickly. Another game what I thought you got used to the controls easily, was in Batman Arkham Asylum. Also that had good missions and quests and I guess it is sort of linear too.
Many open world games have fast travel. This was one of the thing's I liked about The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion. You could travel between the main cities if you didn't want your character to travel on foot. But in Skyrim you had to find the main cities before you could fast travel. Sometimes it good if you want to build up your level or look for loot. But if I want to do a mission, sometimes I can't be bothered traveling from different cities just to complete one mission.
