A quick look at early fangames in Dreams!
NeoMetallix > 05-14-2019, 01:56 PM
It's been less than a month in early access but there are already a number of Sonic fan games(and some movies) made in Dreams. They range from rough to very polished in the case of the Chao Garden. But with more time I could see some really amazing things coming from this. If they could make Mario Maker in LittleBigPlanet which was very limited compared to this game, imagine what will be in a year from now. I plan on even giving it a try myself.
Are you excited for this new avenue for fan games? It eliminates the technical know how of making your own engine or mods although it does take a bit of time to get your head around it even with the massive amount of tutorials and help you can view.

I haven't heard of this game before but did like playing LBP at my friends house. I've been trying out various fangames as well. Looking forward to what people will create in this game. -

Essentially, if you build a team, combine this somehow with version control, you basically have, the power, in your hands to remake Sonic Adventure without SEGA or SONIC TEAM.
Yeah there are people who have recreated lots of scenes perfectly from Dead Space to Minecraft. My favorite example for the Sonic stuff is the Chao Garden, it's so spot on and detailed. Someone also made a working very quality model of Knuckles.

Nor do you have the burden of a steep learning curve to learn OpenGL, and other 3D graphics APIs
The above statement is the reason why my creativity has had such a damper whenever the thought of producing gaming content came to mind.
It takes literally YEARS OF EFFORT to get somewhere to start creating something. After 10 years as a programmer I only now consider myself proficient to work on a real game's code. And now I am at base one again because there's a whole new load of stuff to learn. Game engine API, OpenGL API, and the underlying runtime library of Microsoft Visual C++. Urgh! No thanks!
The games are rough, the music is not cool, but that's to be expected.
It still takes a ton of learning but it has very intuitive tutorials and MUCH easier than the ways you mentioned with actual coding. As far as the music goes you can make your own if you want and you can also import audio. I expect lots to come out of this over the years. Their previous game, LittleBigPlanet, was designed as a 2D platformer and someone made Mario Maker IN LBP, which shouldn't have been possible with its limitations.

The longterm goal is they want to eventually allow people to sell the games they create within the game so obviously any copyrighted stuff like Sonic games won't work but when they get that going it'll be interesting to see what happens. It essentially allows you to create games that wouldn't be created otherwise because of market trends, etc.
This kind of thing would render the long development cycles of games obsolete. This is doing for games what Golang did for systems software!! -

That Sonic model's really neat! Did you make it yourself or did someone in the community do it? I know the people who play MediaMolecule games can be pretty nifty in that regard so the latter wouldn't surprise me. -

No I didn’t make it, I just played a few premise levels. That said I can take the model and remix it if I feel like I could improve it. I’d get credit and so would the original person who made it.
You don’t even have to remix the models you can take it as is and use it in a level you create if you don’t want to make your own model. -

Sonic's 3D model, is available all over the 'net now. I started seeing models of increasing quality floating around the 'net since at least 2012
I dunno if you noticed but Metallix seems to have recorded this straight from his PS4. I'm not so sure it's a model that you can just download straight off the internet; it's more likely that someone in the Dreams community has rigged this together and put it up onto the database, sort of how levels are uploaded in LBP - either that or Metallix made it himself, which returns us to my original question. -

@"Sonic2k" nope it wasn't imported into the game. These models are created entirely with the in-game tools which is why some other models look not so good to say the least. How do they do it? I don't know, I've not yet finished the tutorials. lol I'm going to do all the tutorials before I attempt sculpting things. -

I uploaded an updated video. It shows some of the previous levels with updated physics and collision as well as a new level that’s an RPG.

I didn’t finish but that Chao Garden is something else. It is really close and captures the feel of the original.
