It's tradition in Sonic games that their levels have their own gimmicks. Some are awesome, while others are so poorly designed or just bad in general, that it often drain your lives. Which stage gimmicks is this for you?
Me? 2D water levels, sometimes it goes to 3d levels too. -

Yes, I hated the water levels as a kid. One thing I did not like were enemies that jump up out of nowhere like the grasshoppers in Marble Garden. Sometimes I'd lose so many rings over that. -

Oh man, how could I have forgot of the Metropolis Zone?! The crabs and the slicers that shoot their blades always get me too. -

A lot of the stages in the original release of Sonic 1 feel cheap due to that "spike bug" where you don't get invincibility frames after getting hurt by them. -

Aside from that, I despised the bouncy floor in wacky workbench. -

I never really said it out loud before, but Marble Zone. The slow and calculated movement through out the level really feels tedious to me.
I actually love the water levels #^-^#;;; EDIT ... Wacky Workbench too.
...!!! I love the puzzleness of that level even tho you could kind of say the same thing.
