Saw the film recently. It was the best of the 3 movies by far. The Maria flashbacks in particular were handled very well. -

Agreed that it was the best of the three. Maria was handled well and IMO Agent Stone was done much better than the second where he barely got any airtime. -

Ah, thanks!
Well, since we have spoilers now.
First, Gerald and Maria. I mentioned I didn't like them in this movie because of how shallow they were despite technically following their original roles in Sonic Adventure 2.
Sure, Maria is still Shadow's friend from the research base who got killed by the interference of GUN. But she ended up just being "some nice girl" instead of having the characteristics that made her stand out. Being that Maria spent her entire life on the Space Colony Ark and hoped she'd be able to visit Earth someday, with Shadow being created to cure her. Then in her dying breaths during the GUN raid, wishes for Shadow to give a chance for the people of Earth to be happy despite her never being there and them being responsible for her death. Way more than just "she was nice to Shadow but then died, oh no".
And Gerald highly upsets me in how they adapted the Eclipse Cannon, a tool created by a well-meaning scientist turned into doomsday weapon against the world that was so unkind to him after he was driven to madness after Maria's death. Now turned "THIS IS MY BIG EVIL BAD GUY PLAN BWAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!". You get no sense that this is a broken man driven to madness when all he tried to do is help, you just get Robotnik again which, don't get me wrong, I love Jimbotnik as much as the next guy and I'll never get tired of Jim Carrey's acting, but Gerald felt more like Eggman Nega than anything. Just the "eviler Eggman".
And you can say that's all due to the limitations of the movie run-time, but I call bogus. You could absolutely abridge Maria's wish and Gerald's insanity without stripping the two down to their basic narrative functions.
Jim Carrey interacting with himself is still pretty funny though, I will admit.
And about the post-credit stuff.
I don't got much to say on Amy aside from characterization concerns that would need an entire thread of their own, and also how she is introduced. Tails and Shadow got introduced in the post-credit sequences like they're just about to start a new adventure, but Amy's introduction looks like the adventure had already started. So that one is less of a concern and more just me wondering if the next movie is just gonna walk back in time or she's just gonna be awkwardly there now and quickly introduced.
Metal Sonic though, made me squeal like a little schoolgirl, and I'm actually intrigued as to what the multiple Metal Sonics thing is.
I was actually speculating with my stepbrother when we were walking out of the movie theater what the big bad villain would be for the next movie since Jimbotnik's out of the picture and Metal Sonic seems to be a generic goon now. He said Agent Stone, but I proposed that it would be cool if all these Metal Sonics were being controlled by one central Neo Metal Sonic, and that's the big bad.
Now that is absolutely wishful thinking, but I can't imagine Agent Stone being the next big villain. I have no problems with the character, but from a marketing standpoint, you'd want the big bad villain to be a character from the games, and no one's excited to see Sonic versus Agent Stone.
So just saying, Neo Metal controlling a legion of Metal Sonics would be pretty neat... -

Hmmm, I thought the characters were fine during my watch and I did like that it wasn't a 1:1 retelling of the story. However, I do agree with your points that it could have been done better but the problem with that is I think they had to stay constrained to the PG rating which is why they didn't portray Gerald that way.
It will be interesting to see if Ivo returns for the 4th movie though, because it depends on if Jim agrees to play the role again. I doubt they would make Stone the main villain. We will have to see what they do but I was also giddy about Metal Sonic. To me that means Dr. Robotnik is still alive in the 4th movie, Metal Sonic is afterall a creation by Robotnik. I suppose they could go an Eggman Nega route to explain a different actor playing Robotnik. -

I think he's a good character. Sonic 2 was loosely based off of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic 3 is based off of Sonic Adventure 2. My guess is Sonic 4 will be based around Sonic CD. Maybe some time travel shenanigans. But Eggman has to be there as his creator or maybe it was unfinished and got finished after his death. Your theory of Neo Metal being the baddie could be a thing too. -

I saw the movie last night and enjoyed it. Who do you think should voice Amy in the fourth movie? -

I'm not sure. I think it will probably be someone from Hollywood that no one expected just like Sonic and Knuckles voice actors.
