Part of what makes Mighty so cool is that if you want to get super technical into Sonic history, he's just as old, if not older than Sonic. He's been absent from the games for about 22 years now, and his comic incarnation scored him way more fans.

Part of it is nostalgia, part of it is the comics, but I mostly attribute it to why people like the other characters in the Classic games: similar to Sonic, but different enough to not make it feel like a radically different game.

Yeah good point. Same reasons for me but I do like the point that his character design is just as old as Sonic. If I’m not mistaken it was one of the designs for Sonic before they chose him to be a Hedgehog.
