Don't be fooled when you see another car pass you on the motorway. Chances are, they're just overtaking you because they're in a hurry. No harm done. But what about that one driver who truly IS looking for a battle? The one driver who pulls up in a modified Toyota with the intention of beating you to the next sign? Well, there's not much to say about them. They could be anyone, working for any racing team. Most road users find this individual a pest; someone that they would rather be without. A delinquent road hazard, that's what. However, with every group of people, there's one who thinks that fast driving and the thrill of speed is something to embrace. Something to cherish. Something that they MUST experience at least once before they kick the bucket.
That's who Sonic The Hedgehog was. Born and raised in Japan, Sonic witnessed everything in car culture growing up. Japan was and still is home to the fastest, most wicked machines on the entire planet. Sonic watched maniacal machines whiz down the highways at speeds no human being would have thought was possible otherwise, and he felt jealous. Growing up next to a highway made it even more tempting, as he could see it happening whenever it did.
Now, allow us to fast-forward to the present day. Sonic had recently found a nice job working at a local car parts shop in Tokyo near the harbor. The shop was always busy, and customers were beginning to like Sonic very much due to his cheery and happy attitude and handsome appearance. What they didn't know, however, was that Sonic was saving up the money he made working for a car which he hoped could become the fastest in Japan.
Behind the store in the employee parking sat a modified Nissan Silvia S15, a car that Sonic was certain he could tune to glory. He had already installed a new air filter, a new exhaust system, and a performance ECU chip. All he had left to install was a nitrous oxide injection system, and he was certain that he'd have the car he needed to impress the world. Given that his best friend Tails was a super-genius, it was only a matter of time before he'd have gotten into the world of tuning up head-turning machines, which he already had. Tails' brains had rendered him the most feared tuner and driver in the world, bar none. Not a single time had he ever been beaten.
Sonic hoped to be the first to do so.
The second his shift ended, Sonic hopped over the counter and began searching the shop as a customer. He looked over his shoulder at the person who took his place as the cashier.
"Nitrous oxide injection systems. Exactly what I need. I'm gonna need three tanks of that. Aluminum tanks preferred."
"All right," the cashier replied.
With his newly built Nissan ready for the job that it had been given, all Sonic had to do was wait for nightfall. After a while, he felt his stomach rumbling and decided that he'd stop somewhere to eat. He pulled up at the first small eatery that he happened to come across And hopped out of his car.
As Sonic opened the front door to the place, he noticed that it was quiet and empty.
Boy, was that about to change.
"Tuna sandwich, no crust," Sonic asked.
"Literally nobody likes the tuna around here," the waitress replied.
"Yeah, well I do," Sonic sassed.
Suddenly, the air was alight with the sounds of turbochargers and exhaust notes. Sonic spun his head around. Outside, a blue Nissan Skyline GT-R, a red Mazda RX-7, and a white Toyota Celica GT-FOUR could be seen pulling up in unison. Tails emerged from the Skyline.
Well, Tails DID have an IQ of 450, so it figured that he would drive such a technologically advanced car.
The red Mazda RX-7's driver emerged as well, revealing herself to be none other than Tangle The Lemur. The white Toyota Celica's driver-side door flicked open to reveal the figure of Charmy The Bee.
The three of them walked along, almost in unison, to the door of the shop. Tails pushed open the door, rather surprised to see Sonic standing there.
"Sonic! How's my best buddy in the world?" Tails asked.
"Wonderful," Sonic said. "I've finally built up the car I needed to properly enter the world of street racing."
Tails patted his best friend on the back. "You'll really enjoy it with us. I'm just surprised you didn't get into racing SOONER!"
Sonic smiled at Tails and finished up his sandwich. "So, you racing tonight?"
Tails nodded. "And, I'd be more than happy to welcome you onto my team."
The two best friends shook hands and set for the door.
Tangle bounced up and down in her usual excitement. "OH, WE HAVE A NEW TEAM MEMBER!? SONIC!? OH, BOY!! I'VE BEEN DYING TO SEE HOW WELL YOU CAN DRIVE!! CAN I SEE? CAN I SEE? CAN I SEE?" she begged.
Tails couldn't help but smile a little at Tangle's eagerness. Tangle was just that kind of girl whose carefree happiness spread joy wherever it went. Being with Tangle sort of made you fell like you were on holiday with her. Some say that's the main reason why Tails let Tangle join his team.
Time passed. Nightfall came over Tokyo as usual. The abandoned warehouse districts (which should have been quiet and empty) were alight with the sounds of car engines and chatter from racers. Performance cars of every type lined the old buildings, with people either showing them off or being shown off to. Sonic was amazed by the fact that he didn't get into this sooner. His Nissan Silvia was attracting quite a bit of attention, especially given its fresh condition and newly built engine. Finally, Tails showed up.
"I assume you're looking for a proper race?" Tails asked.
Sonic nodded.
"Wonderful!" replied Tails. "Lemme see what you've got here."
Tails inspected the engine of the car, looking for any modifications he'd like to have on his machines. He noticed that the engine was indeed in particularly good shape, and that all of the modifications that had been made to it were brand-new.
Tails looked up. "How much money are we betting?"
Sonic was about to place his bet when he looked over Tails' shoulder. Looking at Tails' shiny Nissan Skyline GT-R, Sonic couldn't help but drool. It was likely the fastest car in all of Japan. Sonic was willing to take risks to get it.
"I'll bet my car." Sonic said.
Tails revolted in shock. "Really? For your very first race, you're willing to put your ride on the line?"
Sonic nodded. "I want that Skyline."
"Sonic, that's a bad idea. No one has EVER beaten my car before. You'll lose your car for sure. You still up to it?"
Sonic nodded again.
Tails finally reluctantly agreed.
All the cars began to head out. The old warehouse district wasn't going to make much of a race track. Fortunately, they knew somewhere that would!
A long stretch of highway stood before Sonic. Other racers drove their cars in front of entrances to the road, blocking it off from traffic. A random Mazda 3 stopped in front of one of their blockades.
"What the hell, man!?" its driver called out.
Blaze The Cat looked up from the window of her Porsche 959. "Sorry, pal. This little stretch of road is ours for the night. You're gonna have to find yourself another way home, motherfucker."
The Mazda 3's driver scoffed. "Goddamn street racers...." he muttered to himself.
Four cars lined up at the start. It was half of a mile to the finish down the long stretch. Sonic's Nissan Silvia, Tails' Nissan Skyline GT-R, a green Honda NSX, and a yellow Toyota Chaser sat, waiting for the cue to take off.
Blaze stepped out of her Porsche 959 and walked towards the start line as if she were strutting down a catwalk, opening her coat a little to reveal her curves to the onlookers. "This is illegal anyway, might as well play dirty," she though to herself. She was well unaware that she'd just cringed multiple people reading this story. And yes, I just broke the fourth wall. Please don't hurt me.
She raised her arm towards the starry night sky and began counting down. As she got to one, she swung her arm downward to indicate that the race had begun. The four cars all peeled out in unison, spinning their tires with a violent screech that forced poor Tangle to cover her ears. Sonic found himself lagging behind Tails and the Honda NSX, something he had not anticipated. The Toyota Chaser was the clear loser of the race, but Tails appeared so far to be the clear winner as he streaked ahead. Looking in his rear-view, Sonic was far behind.
Sonic looked down at his steering wheel to see the car's two nitrous injection activation buttons. He slammed his thumb down on the first one, and the car began an extra rocket of speed forward. He tore past the Honda NSX and was closing in on Tails' Skyline. However, this clearly wasn't the first time Tails had dealt with an opponent using nitrous oxide injection to momentarily catch up to him. Tails had a direct port nitrous system as well, and did not hesitate to activate it. The Skyline GT-R shot ahead once again, leaving the slower Silvia in its tracks. Sonic, who was now desperate, hit the second nitrous button. Sonic knew that the Skyline GT-R's engine was much, much stronger than almost any production car motor available, allowing Tails to use a lot more nitrous oxide than Sonic's car was capable of. Given the current situation, however, Sonic decided that it was well worth it. Activating his second tank of nitrous caused his Nissan Silvia's engine to immediately start spewing smoke. It was overheating fast, but Sonic still had an inch of confidence left in him that he could make it to the finish line before his machine's engine blew. Even with all he had, the Nissan Skyline that Tails drove was simply too fast.
Suddenly, there was a sound of thunder.
A ball of flame ripped from underneath the bonnet of the Silvia. Sonic dove out of the car as it went up in flames. All of the onlooking racers covered their eyes as they knew what was about to happen next; the fire would reach the nitrous oxide gas stored in the aluminum tanks.
A second, even larger explosion rocked the ground beneath them as the poor Nissan Silvia erupted into a volcano of flames. Bits and parts of the car flew in every direction.
There was simply no way that anyone would ever be driving THAT car again.
After Tails crossed the finish line first, he drove back to confront Sonic.
"Tough luck," Tails remarked.
"I owe you a car now. But I no longer have a car to give you," Sonic said. "That was my only one."
Tails thought for a second.
After a few minutes of silence, Tails finally spoke.
"I wouldn't have wanted that car anyway."
Sonic looked up.
Tails continued speaking. "I actually felt kind of sorry for you that you had to start out racing with a car on such a low budget. I was hoping you'd lose so I could get you a proper car to drive with us in."
Sonic looked confused. "But.................you............."
"Shush." Tails said. "We've been best friends, perhaps even brother figures, for years and years. You should have just come to me if you wanted a proper car."
Sonic didn't know what to say.
".....................................thank you, Tails."
"You're welcome, Sonic."
Days later, Tails had a car shipped in that he was certain would be absolutely perfect for Sonic. It was shiny and modern, and contained one of the strongest engines ever lifted into a car for public sale. When Sonic was invited to come and see what it was, he couldn't believe his own eyes.
"A real Toyota Supra!?" Sonic exclaimed.
'Twas true, the Toyota Supra was a marvel. It's often considered to be one of the fastest, best-handling cars of all time. Not only this, but there are an almost infinite number of upgrades available for the car. The Supra that Sonic had been given was ruby red in color, and it shined brighter than many of the stars in the night sky. It was clear Tails had worked tirelessly to find a Supra in such good condition.
"Can I take it for a spin?" Sonic asked.
"It's your car." Tails responded. "But let me come along."
Starting up the Supra was quick and easy, and the vehicle's motor ran like a song. He put the car in drive and let it run.
The drive was surprisingly comfortable and enjoyable. Sonic and Tails couldn't help but kick back a bit as they cruised along Tokyo's streets in the shiny red monster. But it would still be a number of minutes before Sonic realized just how much speed and power Tails had just given him access to.
At an intersection sat a white Ferrari Testarossa. It appeared modified a bit, as it had a noticeable rear spoiler and aerodynamics kit. Its exhaust appeared modified as well, and its rims had been changed to fit finer tires. Sonic pulled right up next to the Ferrari, admiring its good looks.
"Nice car," Sonic remarked. "What's the retail on one of those?"
The white Testarossa's driver smirked and laughed to himself. "More than you can afford, pal! FERRARI!" He began to showboat by revving the vehicle's massive 12-cylinder engine.
Tails, disgusted by the man's cocky, arrogant attitude, turned his head to face Sonic.
"Smoke 'em...." Tails ordered.
The Supra and the Ferrari began to rev as the traffic light counted down to become green. 5,500 RPM's seemed like the perfect launch to Sonic. The mere instant that the light shown green, the two supercars peeled out and rocketed up to speed. The Supra and the Ferrari weaved in and out of traffic trying to outrun each other. Sonic felt as if he were being punched in the chest by the Supra's outrageous acceleration and speed; he'd never driven such a machine before. Being used to a much slower and less capable Silvia, the Toyota Supra was truly terrifying! The car had no modifications to it whatsoever, and yet it had already somehow reached 160 miles per hour! The Ferrari Testarossa's driver was humiliated as he tried desperately to keep up; how could a modified, race-spec Testa' be so easily outran by a car with a Toyota badge on it!? Sonic and Tails were both pressed back into their seats as the Toyota Supra carried them on to 170 miles per hour with no problems. Sonic glanced into the rear-view mirror to find the poor Ferrari had vanished.
"Good job," Tails congratulated. "I think I can use you."
Sonic looked down at Tails. "Where do you usually race?"
Tails rolled his eyes thinking. "I don't really have a fixed location. I just go wherever there's someone with a fast car and a stack of bills to bet. I can show you plenty of places where most of the racers have more bucks than brains."
Sonic nodded, excited to see where his adventure would take him next.
