If Jim Carrey didn't return for Sonic 3, it's likely that they would have wrote that character out of the story briefly at the start. Thus quite a lame ending for a character that is supposed to be escaping defeat all the time.

Since Paramount makes so much money off of this franchise(2nd movie being the largest video game adaptation ever until the Mario movie came out), it's likely that they won't stop at the third movie and probably continue on several after. We know Carrey won't stay on board and was almost out of the third, so how would you end his character in a meaningful way and who would you introduce as his successor?

It's really good question when it comes to "How do you defeat the Eggman for good?"

If it were up to me, I'd really wanna drive it home that this is it, he ain't coming back.

Say, we're finally having a big climactic final battle with Super Sonic (maybe Shadow too), Dr. Robotnik in his latest and most absurd creation yet leading our protagonists to fight against him in space. What happens in the battle can be anything, so long as it's show Robotnik is just completely done with Sonic and truly believes that this. Is It! Just let Jim Carrey ham it the heck up for this final performance as the good doctor who truly believes this to be a decisive battle and has absolutely lost it. All until the final blow is dealt to Robotnik's big space mech or whatever, and the Doc himself is sent flying away into the vastness of space in an escape pod that goes way off trajectory at a great speed and is never seen again.

Then we can have our scene with the protagonists celebrating or whatever as we cut to Robotnik still in that pod livid at not only another defeat, but now no way to get back to Earth. Heck, perhaps he has some regrets in his evil ways and that if he only had the chance he would- OOP, NEVERMIND! Robotnik crash lands into some sort of planet full of alien wildlife. No apparent intelligent beings... A ton of resources... No oversized hedgehogs to ruin his perfect vision... THIS PLACE IS WAY BETTER THAN EARTH!

The scene fades as Robotnik realizes that and begins laughing maniacally as he already starts working on some sort of contraption to take over this new world. If he can't have the previous one, he'll certainly have this one.

I wouldn't wanna outright kill him, Chaos no! But it would also be lame if he just... learned his lesson and stopped being evil. So I like the idea of him just finding somewhere else to be evil. And of course, I can put more thought into fleshing out this idea of mine but... eh, you get the jist.

As for his successor... Yeesh, now I'm stumped at only the who. The giddy part of my brain wants to scream "OOOOOH, OMELETTE! HAVE IT BE FAN CHARACTER OMELETTE!!!" But... look, I'm trying to be a tad bit realistic here. But whoever the successor is, which I'm betting would be a movie original, would have some connection to Robotnik in some way.

It's easy to say Agent Stone but... LAAAAAAAAME! Have it be a backup robot or something Robotnik specifically told Stone to activate if he's ever gone for good after it nearly happened when he went to the Mushroom Planet. I doubt it'd straight up be Metal Sonic, but a robot to pick up where Robotnik left off feels appropriate. The only who could pick up the mantle of Robotnik is one BUILT by Robotnik, after all.

    So that's what I think.

(Also, did you notice how there is a lore reason for movie Sonic to call Robotnik "Eggman"? He calls Tom "Donut Lord" and Maddie "Pretzel Lady", so he's just following that naming scheme.)

Huh that is a good question. I do not know. I would probably keep the character and write in a reason for why he looks different. Although that is just as lame as him dying from a fall. Hmmm

I was thinking since Shadow will be in it, we could bring in Blaze(as from a different dimension) and have Eggman Nega replace the Earth one. Not sure how good that would be but it's one way to do it.

They will eventually have to do something because, while they were lucky to get Carrey back for a third go around, it is very unlikely that he will return after the third movie so how to write him out is still relevant despite him confirmed for 3.

Eggman Nega has always sounded a bit silly to me. Eggman

Honestly? I'm kind of hoping he just retires from villainy at the end of Sonic 3. I feel like that would be a nice send off.

Also I'd be on board with Eggman Nega replacing Eggman in the movie franchise and introducing Blaze the cat! They totally need to do that for Sonic 4. Eggman

i've always imagined that this is how they'd write him out of the story when the time comes, tbh. it seems fitting for the tone these movies tend to have
