Announced on the Official Sonic the Hedgehog Twitter earlier today, 2024 has be officially announced as the Year of Shadow!
I know everyone was calling this year the year of Shadow already with the 3rd Sonic Movie and Sonic x Shadow Generations, but now it's totally official -

Well, time for Shadow appreciation!
I'll be honest. Throughout the years I haven't really been caring for Shadow as a character. Even as a little kid I payed no mind to him in favor for the cooler blue hedgehog that was actually nice to others and stuff. And nowadays he just felt unnecessary after Sonic Adventure 2.
But honestly, Year of Shadow couldn't have come at a better time, I've been really warming up to Shadow's character this year. He's one of the more complex characters in the franchise and a prime example of being deeper than the surface, what with him ultimately being a big softie with a tough exterior. I can respect the "grouchy but I'll still help my friends" types.
Plus, he's actually really interesting in Archie, though I haven't gotten far enough to really comment on that.
Naturally, for Year of Shadow, I've also been playing Shadow '05. And to keep it short, I'm kind of enjoying myself so far. I like replaying games and one that requires me to replay it is just a dream, plus the mission-based gameplay makes it stand out a bit more from other Sonic games.
I'd also like to point out the sheer awesomeness of them making Shadow's bike a real thing now. Not much to say on it since I'm not even near being knowledgable on bikes, but just knowing the Dark Rider is now real makes so damn happy.
And hey, they canonized All-Stars Racing. -

Oh, forgot to mention. I'm crossing my fingers for Year of Shadow meaning we finally get that Steam release of Shadow '05.
It won't happen.
But we can dream. -

yeah, replaying ShTH was more fun this time around when I was replaying it rather than the first time I played it, I'm much more patient w/ the game and it's missions than when I first played it; it also didn't help that ppl were kind of over-dramatic abt the amnt of times you have to replay the game; yes, you have to get the 10 unique endings but if you take your time and understand the missions it's not too bad. There are a few missions that weren't fun for me to go through but you can almost go around those stages with a different route or you only have to play it once
I think the opinion on ShTH has changed in recent years to be more lenient (kind of like w/ '06) so the year of Shadow being this year also means a lot of ppl are more excited for it, that clearly showed over the reactions for Sonic x Shadow Generations
there's a lot to say abt Shadow's character but yeah, Archie really was doing a good job w/ his character, and a lot of other side characters honestly... which is maybe why it took a while for ppl to notice Sonic has really only been the playable character for years, characters like Shadow and Blaze had nice stories and arcs in Archie that you almost forgot neither of them had really been playable aside from the Olympic Games titles -

It's nice that we have a year of Shadow now, but it's also disappointing when you realize that most of the games Shadow has a major role in aren't officially available anymore.
SA2 has a Steam port, but it's kind of spotty, and hasn't been updated in years.
Heroes got a PC port almost 2 decades ago, but that was on a physical disk, not Steam. It also doesn't work on modern computers without some tampering.
Sonic Battle was never released on the Game Boy Advance, and never was ported anywhere else.
Shadow 05 is playable on Wii and Xbox 360 through backwards compatibility, but that's about it.
And then there's Sonic 06. It also stayed put, but I'd attribute that more to Sega not wanting to port it without fixing its glaring issues, and at the same time not being interested in doing so. -

At least, in SA2's case, it can be modded and fixed. You can restore it to get rid of all of the glitches caused by porting it and give it all of the missing graphical effects too. You can also use upscaled textures that gives it a kind of remastered look. -

I would love a PC port of Shadow the Hedgehog! It's one of the games I've been wanting to play the most, but I don't own any of the consoles it was on originally. Plus, it seems like it has a lot of potential for fun mods if it does get to PC! -
