I know he's been called Eggman for many years now, but my first exposure to the character was when he was still primarily known as Robotnik so that's what I've always called him (I'll throw in Eggman from time to time however). Thing is Robotnik is such a better sounding name. How can anyone take a name like Dr. Eggman seriously? Lol -

It was the same for me, I was first introduced to robotnik and I very much see classic "eggman" and aosth/satam's villain as "robotnik", the name fits better as someone who works w/ robots and is trying to pollute the earth in my opinion. the suffix -nik is for someone associated with or working w/ smth, so "robotnik" would literally mean someone who works w/ robots, I also liked the name of his robots being badniks... it was so 90s
I like that robotnik is still considered his "legal" name while eggman is a nickname given to him (at least in english canon) but I also tend to flip-flop between the names when talking abt the character depending on context
interestingly though, even if in english he was called robotnik, a lot of his vehicles had the "egg" prefix like the egg mobile/egg-o-matic -

Yeah, I've always found Robotnik to be a more suitable name for him. -

I tend to like Eggman better because it fits his look better. I know it was a nickname but it is odd that he goes by his nickname(at least in the English version, I don't know about Japan). In adventure 2 he calls himself Eggman though his grandfather is gerald robotnik. -

@ I feel the same way. I always liked the name Robotnik better because it sounded like a bad guy's name and it fit him perfectly because he built and used robots to try to control the world. I've grown accustomed to Eggman but I am glad he is referred to as Robotnik in the movies. I wonder if they will call him Eggman in the third movie???
Also I like Sonic's first nickname for him better. RoBUTTnik.

They'll probably do a mixture of the names. You might have noticed, but in the first and second films, Sonic calls Robotnik "Eggman" as an insult, while everyone else uses his normal "Robotnik" name.

I was introduced to the character as Robotnik, but I came to know him as "Eggman" just as well.
While I'm here, I might as well talk about something interesting I found:
So, Sonic Adventure actually wasn't the first time they used the "Eggman" name in the west. For some reason, in one episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails calls him "Eggman" once. It's really bizarre, because every other instance in the series calls him "Robotnik". -

You know, I should have known that being how -nik is a Slavic name and my dad's side of the family is Serbian lol. The more you know. -

Throwing in my two cents a bit late here.
For starters, I usually call him "Dr. Robotnik" or "Dr. Eggman" interchangeably, unless I'm talking about the old Western content like Archie or the cartoons, which then I'll just call him Robotnik.
But I actually like the name Eggman with the context it's given. That, it's a nickname Sonic made up to mock Robotnik, but then the doctor decided to instead own that name as a sort of power play. His most famous theme song has the chorus "I am the Eggman!", for crying outloud, he took that name in stride.
Plus, I feel as if people completely miss the menace factor Eggman still has, it's just that he's much more sinister and not so blatant with it like in the old Western cartoons.

Sure, he's constantly got that big funny grin on his face, but that's what makes him terrifying. He's a sadistic mad doctor who'll gladly indulge in the schadenfreude of your demise while he plasters that same grin everywhere he can, and suddenly, that it's not that funny of a grin anymore.
The best way I can describe Eggman's creep factor is that Eggman is scary like how clowns are scary, if that makes sense. Think Eggmanland, a death trap of an amusement park filled with bright colors, and most importantly, his imagery all over the place. Seems goofy at first until you realize Eggmanland is the pinnacle of Eggman's cruelty. Designed to have your last moments be that of wacky contraptions plastered with his mug as if to laugh in your face as you draw your last breath.
That cruelty is a big factor for Eggman, too. I've already mentioned death traps made to infiltrate your mind with his image, but he'll also destroy nature, imprison wildlife, force the world around him to conform to his vision. Let's not forget that time he held Tails and Amy hostage as a way to get Sonic to hand over a Chaos Emerald he knew was fake, having a gun pointed at Amy fully intending to paint the floor red and pink, and subsequently launching Sonic in a shuttle into his supposed death right in front of his two dearest friends.
And on top of all that, he just towers over everyone else in the cast. He can, will and has just tossed these oversized animals around like ragdolls from his sheer size alone, and you gotta speculate he does have some strength to him.
I may be going too in-depth on a thread just asking if you prefer the name "Robotnik" or "Eggman", but talk here seems to imply that the Eggman we have today is just a joke compared to old Western Robotnik, and although modern Eggman has his comedic moments, him being mainly played for laughs is FAR from the case.
He only calls himself that for the satisfaction of seeing you bow down before the one you used to jokingly call "Eggman".
This is the man who blew up half the moon as a threat.
He is Doctor Ivo Robotnik.
But Most importantly...
HE IS THE EGGMAN!!!
(And sometimes Robotnik.) -

I tend to usually refer to him as "Eggman" since that's the more common and recognizable moniker these days, but between the two names I prefer "Robotnik" a lot more. It sounds cooler.
