Anyways, this has been bubbling in the background for a few weeks. With the end of school for awhile, I think I can finally manage it as I want to, so read on below if you're interested in a little competition: *~~ It doesn't take any real effort to come upon many negative comments regarding the gameplay of the newer Sonic games. One of the issues that has come to the forefront of the debacle is the current level design; the biggest complaint about it aside from the glitchiness and bottomless pit factors is that many levels are just too unimaginative. However, few have ever done or even suggested anything more about it other than the usual "yuze moar colurz", so to speak, and complaining without action is simply annoying and unacceptable. So, I'm sure you've figured out the purpose of this contest already. That's right: Your task is to design your very own Sonic the Hedgehog location!** == RULES* The theft of another person's artwork will result in the total annihilation of your entire online life and history. NO EXCEPTIONS. You are able to enter a piece created in any medium you choose: CG, pixel, pencil, paint, 3D, etc. The location must be entirely original. You are perfectly free to use standard Sonic items (rings, bumpers, goal posts, etc.) and traditional series obstacles (loops, platforms, spikes, etc.) if you want to, but the overall location itself must not have any substantial bearing to an official locale, scrapped or otherwise. The artwork itself can not directly use any part of official level design; Textures, floor sprites, backgrounds, etc. are strictly prohibited. This means that if you are doing any type of computer artwork, everything within the picture must be original other than what is stated above. NOTE: If you are unsure about what I will be willing to accept, PM me with a link to your entry. As extra confirmation, your picture does not have to look like a floor plan or a map of a level. Concept/fully developed landscape art is just as acceptable. Your location must have a name which, obviously, must be of your own imagination as well. You must also include commentary about your piece of artwork; your inspirations, how you see the level playing out, any specific areas you want to note, etc. This does not have to be long, however. Two to three sentences is fine. You will have exactly two weeks to submit a link to your entry before the contest closes on 12 A.M. EASTERN TIME, FRIDAY, JUNE 13th, 2008. NOTE: The rules and dates are subject to change as I deem fit for the fairness of all contestants and/or better prepared entries. RUBRIC Creativity: How well does your level stand out from the usual geography used by past Sonic locations? How well did you adapt the architecture to suit Sonic's speed and acrobatic abilities? Does your piece include obstacles and/or potential areas for Sonic to exploit and have fun with that are unique? Color: How colorful is your level? How well did you adapt your chosen color scheme to suit the type of landscape you are illustrating? Is there any contrast that better compliments the rest of your color scheme, or does it take away? What overall mood are you trying to convey with the colors presented? Overall Composition: How well does everything come together? What type of view of your location is presented? Are the different pieces of the overall shot, such as any obstacles, easy to make out? How do you work to balance the picture's symmetry? Is it simply aesthetically pleasing? JUDGING Judging will commence when the contest closes at 12 A.M. on June 13th and cease on 12 A.M June 15th. In order to allow for more member interaction and to increase the participants� chances of placing, there will be two forms of judging: traditional and popular. Traditional: Your artwork will be judged by solely by me. Pieces will be scored a 1 out of 10 on each of the criteria above and given an aggregate score out of 30 along with a general consensus about the artwork. Popular: A poll will be opened shortly after the contest closes where the entire user base will be allowed to vote on and discuss their own personal favorites. When the traditional judging has ceased, the poll will be closed. After all of the scores are tallied up, the winners will be announced. The placers of the highest scores will be given the prizes listed below with no distinction made between the types of judging. Ex. If a person places first in both judging arenas, they win two first place prizes. Simple, no? PRIZES First Place: You will be able to request a custom, full page colored Sonic fan art piece drawn by yours truly. (For quick reference: My (small) portfolio.) Second Place: You will be able to request a custom, color Sonic character fan art piece with a maximum of four characters within it drawn by me. Third Place: You will be able to request a custom Sonic character fan art piece with a maximum of two characters within it also drawn by me. Other Participants: You will receive a nifty banner to flaunt in your signature as a testament to your participation, made by none other than sMy PANCAKES himself! NOTE: For those granted the right to request, be aware that the request must be mutually agreed upon so it is within the artist's capabilities. CONTESTANTS w/ ENTRIES: 1. Juke Box Hero 2. Sparky 3. cap-dude Misty Hollow Commentary: The idea is based of Sonic anime cut scenes from Sonic CD and Sonic the Movie. The idea to similar to when we see are spiky blue friend leaping between cliff edges, and racing to the peak of steep mountains. The idea for the picture is that calm before the storm moment, that moment before the blue blur must navigate his way through steep cliff edges, and deep chasms. 4. LilAvii == Feel free to ask any questions or even make suggestions regarding the rules and set up of this endeavor. But overall, have fun, be creative, and let's see if you actually have the skills to show Sonic Team a thing or two. ~_^ ~~ NOTE:** The stipulations for the prizes have been edited. Firstly, the requests will be given in placement order. That means the first place winners will receive theirs first, followed by the second and third place respectively. Also, for first place winners, you will only be able to request art from me and not another artist. If you have any concerns about these changes or want to volunteer as a viable artist that a winning contestant can choose from, then PM me about your concerns. Thank you. Minor Note: The times for the duration of judging have been corrected. T'was a simple editing error on my part and hopefully this will dissolve any future confusion. NOTE: Due to concerns made to me by some contestants, the contest's ending date has been extended to FRIDAY, JUNE 13TH. There will not be another extension after this, and one can choose to drop out or have their piece judged should they still be unable to finish. Thank you.[/b] Since very little feedback has come from the contestants, I will wait until next weekend to allow for submissions. I'm terrible when I'm asked to create art on a schedule, because I really can't switch on my creativity nor want to draw. I'm trying to get over that, though. After all, if I want to do art for a living, I really have no choice. XP @ Sparky: You don't necessarily have to be good at Photoshop to have a chance here. After all, the contest stipulates that you can do whatever art medium you feel most comfortable with. X3

I'd tell ya, but I'd have to kill ya, with the added bonus of looting your house. <3 Anyways, COME ON PEOPLE! pokes the people You know you want to sign up for this! You're basically getting free art here just for submitting some of your own! Heck, you don't even hafta do much. A sketch will do! more shameless plugging and prodding In actuality, I actually do need some more people in here. Avii discussed an oversight with me about the first place prize in terms of asking other artists. I didn't think that a request from another artist could be met with displeasure, especially since this contest is so low-key; much more than I thought it would be. As such, to avoid surprising anyone with a huge request, if anyone feels like they want to donate their services, you'll be put down as an artist that the person can choose from for their request. Otherwise, the prize's stipulations will have to be edited. XP Any takers?
