Don't close your eyes, don't give into the fright
**Open in a deserted and almost completely dead forest. An abandoned town can be seen in the distance, many of the buildings crumbled and fallen from disuse. You hear the shouts of several men as well as girl. Emerging into the side of the woods running away from the town was a 19 year old black and blue hedgehog clutching a duffle bag thrown across her back.**

The wind blew through my hair as my footsteps grew heavier with every step, my breath growing deeper with exhaustion. I turned to look behind me to see if I was still being followed. I was surprised that there was anyone out in this wasteland. My dufflebag was awkward and hard to run with and my fist clutched around my favorite dagger. I remained looking back, I knew these woods like the back of my hand. However that didn't account for things IN the woods.

I collided with something, smacking straight into them and flattening them with enough force for me to flip completely off. The grunt from the thing I hit let me know it was someone else.

Out of breath I glared at the mobian infront of me on the ground on his back, "Would you WATCH IT!?" I snapped, obviously out of breath and coughing with the effort.

I glared at him and decided to take one of his firewood sticks and hit him in the side with it.

"Dont. Yell at me." I glared at him, already angry from having to run and now this, I was just getting a bit angry at this point.

I opened my mouth to talk but was cut short by another voice. They were getting close. Without thinking I reached down and grabbed the wrist of the guy I had just run into and started pulling him to run.

"You do not want them catching you! They are part of the Factory!" I hastily explained as I tried to get him to run.

I stopped for a second and looked at him dead in the eyes.

"Where have you been your whole life? Are you not aware of the Factory? The giant manufacturing plant that the workers never leave and have never seen the light of day? These people are looking for anyone else they can add. They don't care that we weren't doing anything wrong they want to make us work, the factory is dying, the population can't stay sustained. Does that answer your question??" I then pulled on his wrist again trying to get him to run.

I had an idea of where to go but I couldn't go there if he wouldn't go with me.

I nodded and then finally began running. The lights and voices had gotten much closer now, the trees lit up as the lights bounced off them in the early evening darkness. I ran through the woods, getting out of breath again but almost there. I ran to the fact of a cliff that began a small mountain and into a cave. I rolled a stone infront of the door and lit a candle.

The light bounced off the walls that were covered in many different colored crystals. I went to a fire pit in the middle of the room and made a small fire. Looking around you could tell I had lived here for a while. Clothing lay folded neatly, food was stored as best they could be in carved out shelves in the rock, a small bed was nested beside the fire. It wasn't very big and it appeared to end very shortly after the reach of the fires light.

"Welcome to my home. They won't see us, the rock fits perfectly into the hole. So tell me about yourself and then I'll give you more information than you'd like to know on the current state of things since you're apparently very cut off from the world. Let's start with how old you are and how you've been living your life??"

"Well uh...my parents were taken when I was very little and I've been in and out of trouble since then. I typically go to town and grab what I need. I hide out here. For the last few generations the government has locked up all the work places. Forcing the workers to stay there and now they have begun small communities within the factory. But recently the population has been dying off due to illnesses, lack of food, lack of cleanliness and things such as that. I am 19 years old and recently they have grown so desperate they are searching for anyone who was not managed to be locked up at the time. I'm Trying to make my way to a friends house. Perhaps you should come with me."

I nodded to him, "Alright then. In the morning we will go, tonight I'm tired.."

I made him a bed of his own and then went to sleep. In my dreams I saw the factories and what I had witnessed. I had seen them carting dead bodies out of the factories I had seen the inside out of curiosity and ran away in fear. This is what happens when we don't keep our government in check. Only an elite few stay out of the mess and are able to live like kings and queens. I tossed and turned in my sleep and was extremely happy when the morning came.

I sat up as some sunlight creeped in through some cracks in the rocks and I looked at the person I had met yesterday. I didn't know him but he didn't seem all that dangerous, maybe I was doing a good thing by helping him out and keeping him from the horror that I had seen.

I got up and made breakfast, setting it out in front of him for when he woke up. I rolled the stone away and went for a walk.

I came back from my walk to find X awake. "Hey it's okay coast is clear. Pack up your things wherever you keep them around here," I gestured to the forest, "and get ready to go. We can't stay here. Things are getting bad fast and now that they chased us into the forest they are going to start looking for others who might be living in it."

I looked at him, touched by how he felt about his home.

"I honestly am not sure. It's been generations that this has been going on so I doubt they are going to touch it but at the same time they are running out of resources and will have to expand even further. I'm not sure honestly. We won't know until it either does or doesn't happen."

I had him follow me out after I had packed up my back and I rolled the rock back in front of the cave. I started off in the opposite direction of the town, covering tons of ground very quickly. I felt kind of bad for X while he was trying to keep up. The forest got thicker and thicker until it was very difficult to take a step but then out of nowhere a path started, hidden from sight. I stepped on it and began walking down it, making up for lost time with the new ability to walk through the dense forest.

Eventually we came to a small make-shift looking town. People scurried about with their lives and barely even noticed our arrival. The forest was so thick that barely any sunlight came through, it almost looked like the inside of a cave. Tree houses lay scattered haphazardly and little paths went everywhere. A small chameleon came up to us, she looked up at us with her big blue eyes and I knelt down to talk to her.

"Hey sweetie..Tell her we're here okay?"

She nodded and gave me a hug before scurrying off. I turned to grin at X and a few moments later-

"HHHAAAAIIIII!!!" Sang a very high pitched and yet beautiful voice.

A white hedgehog with light blue highlights in her hair came running from the crowd. She ran up and jumped on my back, hugging me as tight as she could. She was surprisingly easy to hold up, as if she were made of light.

"So how was the trip? How's town? How are things? Who is your friend? Does he have a name? Is he okay? Are you guys hungry? Do you want some cookies? Do you like the town? How did you find it?" she rattled off question after question in a rapid fire sequence and when she gasped to take a breath I simply smiled at her.

"Aria...this is X. Someone I literally ran into in the woods. The woods are still okay, the factories are getting desperate, and no thankyou on the cookies for now." I tried to answer as many of her questions as I had managed to hear.

She bounced up to X and wrapped him in a tight hug. "Hello!!!! Welcome to the town...I guess we don't have a name for it yet...but welcome anyways!!!" She chirped giddily.

Aria tilted her head as she looked at him, confused by his reaction to her hug.

"I-I'm sorry I didn't mean anything by it!" She looked at him with a sad face.

I looked at him kind of weird too, but I could understand someone that didn't particularly like to be touched.

"So uh...how is life here?" I asked Aria

She perked up immediately, "Life is awesome! As you can see everyone is doing really well and the factory people havn't come anywhere close. We have look outs around the whole town and they have been looking in the mountains etc. " She said happily.

I nodded to her, " so where is Darkshade?" I asked.

She ran off, gesturing for me to follow. I grabbed X by the wrist and dragged him behind me.

Aria tilted her head at him in confusion, "What do you mean you didn't know what I was doing? You've never been hugged before?" She asked.

We came to a stop at a hut that was way away from the rest of them, and unlike the rest of the houses this one was on the ground and it was surrounded by torches. There was an ominous skull on the door, I was glad we were showing up in the morning rather than when it got dark. I lifted the skull and let it fall against the door in a makeshift knocker, twice, and then waited. By now I had let go of X's wrist.

I could hear heavy footsteps approaching the door and then stop for a second right behind it. A few seconds went by and then the door flung open. Standing behind it was the angriest echidna I'd ever seen. He had black quills with bits of dark blue going through them, His eyes were a deep blue, almost black. He had tiny skull beads throughout his dreads and wore a black tank top and black pants and black shoes. He was tall, much taller than me. He leaned against the edge of the door frame, resting his forearm across it, and loomed over us.

"What do you want Mist." He growled out.

"Hey Darkshade." I murmered.

Aria immediately piped up. "Hi Darkiieeee!!!" She squealed, jumping up and hugging him around the neck so that she was hanging there. Her feet were no longer touching the ground and she nuzzled him. "How are you? How did you sleep? How did the raid go last night? Did you meet anyone? How did-"

He covered her mouth and slid her, surprisingly, gently off him and onto the ground. Still holding his hand over her mouth and ignoring the fact that she was still talking, unphased, he looked at me and X.

"Who the hell are you?!" He snapped out, glaring at X.

Darkshade looked him up and down and then turned abruptly and walked into his hut, leaving the door wide open for us to follow. Aria skipped happily alongside X and I closed the door behind us.

"Pssst....Don't worry about darkie, he's my brother, he's really rough but somewhere under there he cares." She whispered to X

Darkshade brought out a map and threw it on the ground, bending down and flattening it out. He pointed to where the woods were that we had just come from.

"Here? They are expanding here??" he asked, circling his fingers around the region as a whole. I nodded to him and he growled and pulled out some red pant and painted a huge X over the whole area.

"So I guess that's another area we shouldn't look for survivors..." he muttered.

Darkshade looked at him with his permanent glare and blinked. Aria jumped a little but much to her and I's surprise Darkshade's expression softened a little...not much but a little.

"I understand where you're coming from. But by now those people have already cleared out the forest looking for the both of you. At this very moment they are probably burning it to the ground. If you left anything there we could formulate a search party to go back with you, but I doubt there is much life left even now...Much less in the amount of time it takes to get enough people banded together to stay safe there and back." He explained.

I was surprised at the softness he was showing X, but then again he always grew softer when someone was going through the loss of their home. Kind of understandable since Aria and him had never truly had a home.

Aria looked at the map and all the X's on it. "There's not much time left Darkie...What if...what if they take over the world???!" She squealed.

"That's not going to happen."

"How are you so sure?" I asked him, looking him dead in the eyes.

He smirked just a slight bit. "because of us. Because of this place we have built."

Darkshade stared after him and then cussed under his breath. I looked at him in surprise, wondering what the problem was.

"What's up?" I asked him.

"I knew I'd seen him before. I don't know whether this is good or bad." He said, then folded up the map and walked out the door. I looked around me and noticed that Aria was gone as well.

"what...?" I took off trying to find them.

Meanwhile::
Aria ran to catch up with X, the breath still not caught up in her lungs. "Wait! Why..Don't....You...Slow...DOWN!" She yelled between breaths. She stopped infront of him, hands on her knees and bent slightly over trying to regain herself.

"Man for a quiet guy you sure walk fast." She exclaimed.

"Look I understand what you're feeling right now, to the utmost fullest degree...I do...But please please try to calm down and please don't go running off. It can't be saved, we are doing our best. Just stay here and don't run off..." She said, a LOT more serious than usual.

Aria looked at him concerned and nodded, "Well alright then. I'll be in the village square should you need me." and with that she left. She had seen breakdowns such as that before with her brother, so it wasn't new to her to be told to go away. But something was different to her about him, something not so dark but...demonic instead? Nah...she felt she was going crazy.

As I ran around the town looking for Darkshade I finally found him talking with some of the higher up people in the villiage. I ran up to him, "What's going on!?" I asked.

Darkshade just pushed me aside and kept talking then walked off towards the edge of the town. I ran to keep up with him not really sure what was going on.

Aria had run up to X looking at his hand, "Oh no not you..." She mumbled. No wonder this hedgehog had seemed so familiar before.

Darkshade walked up at that time and looked at X's hand and let out a low deep growl. He stood so that he was square with X and just watched him, waiting to see what he would do.

I, on the other hand, stood a bit behind Darkshade confused as all get out at what was going on.
