So, after having some problems with the way Tails was portrayed in Sonic Lost World, I came up with this oneshot! Hope you all enjoy! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Something was off… This much Miles ‘Tails’ Prower was very privy to. The twin-tailed fox was currently seated firmly in the cockpit of the Tornado – he briefly took note of the way the light of the late afternoon sun shimmered across the edge of a red wing – flying back to Earth after helping to foil yet another one of Dr. Eggman’s sinister schemes. Behind him, giving of the illusion of growing smaller with every passing second, had been the setting of the subsequent adventure, the Lost Hex. And next to him, standing on a wing with the confidence that could only come from one that had been doing so time and time again, was none other than the Blue Blur himself, Sonic the Hedgehog. The spiky hero in question had a composed look on his face, as would be expected of him. No one would have been able to tell by looking into his bright green eyes and smirking visage the emotional hardships he had just gone through. Hardships that had been the hedgehog’s own fault. Through one impulsive act he had nearly doomed the entire world and set in motion terrible fates for both friends and enemies. But all had been righted. Everything was going to turn out just fine. There was no more need to worry. Sonic the Hedgehog was not one to dwell on the past and that’s what this ordeal was – in the past. It was now nothing more than a memory. However, while Sonic was feeling better over the whole ordeal, the same could not have been said for Tails. Sure, he had managed to escape the clutches of the Deadly Six in part though his own resourcefulness, sure Sonic had taken down Eggman like the hero he was, sure they had returned the world’s life energy back to it… But something just was not right. His mind began to replay the events of the day: Sonic and him taking the Tornado to the skies within minutes of learning of Eggman’s latest plot, the bumpy landing upon the Lost Hex, encountering the Deadly Six for the first time, Sonic kicking the conch away from Eggman, himself saying… Tails winced suddenly as his mind brushed up against that particular memory. The exchange echoed through his head; ‘Tails, we need Eggman to shut off his machine!’ ‘And you don’t trust me to do it!’ ‘What!? N-no, I trust you Tails, it’s just –‘ ‘No you don’t, you trust Eggman more!’ ‘...you trust Eggman more…’ Why, oh why had he said that? Of all the things to do, accusing his best friend, his surrogate big brother, of trusting their greatest foe more than him, and after all he and Sonic had gone through? Tails hadn’t quite been sure what had come over him. Had he been sore over Sonic not listening to him back at Desert Ruins and impetuously kicking the conch away, thereby freeing up the Deadly Six to put their vindictive plan into action? Well, probably, but that still didn’t excuse his actions. Had he known that he could have shut down Eggman’s energy siphoning machine on his own? Yes, but he could have put that point across in a better way. One that didn’t involve jumping to a nonsensical conclusion. Had he been skeptical of Eggman when the doctor suggested the three of them work together? Yes. Very. However, this had not been the first time he and his friends had to work together with Eggman – the incident on the ARK briefly flashed through his mind – and though he had been wary of the doctor all the same, he had been able to put aside personal feelings for the sake of the greater good. So why was this instance any different? Tails couldn’t be sure. Regardless of what had pushed him to say what he had, a feeling of guilt suddenly gripped Tails in an icy embrace. And what made it more pronounced was yet another memory, this one more recent then the last; ‘Sorry about that. I’ll never doubt you again Tails!’ ‘It’s cool.’ ‘’It’s cool.’ That had been the statement Tails had finished their conversation with. The short, simple statement that told Sonic that he had no hard feelings for the hedgehog and that he had readily accepted his apology. However, there was still something amiss with that short exchange the best friends had gone through. Something that would have given the both of them the closure they needed. And then it hit him. While Sonic had made amends and apologized to Tails, the fox had done no such thing to the hedgehog. And if the two-tailed pilot was to be honest with himself, it was Sonic that deserved an apology more. “I’ve been a real jerk – and to Sonic of all people! I have to make this right and do it now.” Sonic knew naught of what was going on in the depths of his friend’s mind as he stood on the wing of the Tornado, the cool breeze tugging lightly at his quills. Out of the corner of his eyes he caught sight of the land below. The first thing he noticed was how bright, lively and full of energy it looked. The way the dark blue ocean water lightly sparkled in the light of the sun, how the mountain ranges seemed to be reaching out as if in grateful bliss, and the multitude of healthy shades of green the flora of the planet had once again taken on served to create a very eye-pleasing scene. It was a stark contrast from the cold, dead look he had been shown only mere hours before. “Now this is what I call ‘picture-perfect’. Sure wish I had bought a camera along!” Sonic thought as his smirk spread into a hearty grin. “Sonic?” The hedgehog’s right ear flickered at the voice of Tails. “What’s up bro?” he asked him, that warm smile still on his face – one that faded away once he had gotten a good look at the vulpine pilot. Tails wasn’t even looking at him. Instead, from a first glance it seemed like he was finding the various buttons and switches of the Tornado more interesting. But Sonic was more perceptive then that and he could tell that there was something else causing this fixation. “Something troubling you?” The fox rubbed the back of his neck. “Well, it’s just that I’ve been thinking….” “About what?” Sonic inquired, genuinely concerned for his friend. “About what happened today.” “Today?” the hedgehog repeated, his head cocked to this side. “Does this have anything to do with getting captured by the Zeti? Because I’m - ” Tails shook his head, cutting Sonic off with a simple “No.” He let out a subdued sigh, his ears slightly falling forward. “And if you’re trying to apologize, thanks, but you don’t need to. In fact, I’m the one who should be apologizing to you.” “Me?” Sonic asked, a bemused look crossing his face. “Whatever for, little bro?” The fox glanced at his friend out of the corner of his eyes. “For the way I acted. Remember? Back at Eggman’s base?” A soft gasp of realization slipped off Sonic’s tongue. Words of allegation rang in his mind. “At the base? You mean after we joined forces with Eggman?” He tried to hide the groan of disgust that came with that memory. Tails nodded. “Yeah. Look Sonic, I shouldn’t have accused you of trusting Eggman more than me. Especially after all we had been through. I know you were only trying to make things right after what happened back at Desert Ruins. And I feel now that I need to make things right between the two of us…” It was here that he at last looked directly at Sonic, humility wavering in his light blue eyes. “I’m really sorry, Sonic.” The hedgehog regarded his companion for one moment, taking due note of the way he had spoken that apology. There had been a veritable sense of sincerity in his voice, this much was clear to Sonic. He could tell that the young fox had definitely regretted how he had acted back on Lost Hex and the way he had sought to atone for it genuinely touched the hedgehog. “Hey, don’t you worry about it, little bro,” Sonic told him with a grin, breaking the silence he had cast upon them. “That’s all in the past now and I’ve got no hard feelings towards you because of it. Never have, never will.” The ghost of smile crossed Tails face at those words. “So, we’re cool now, right?” Sonic readily flashed a thumbs up. “Always, Tails.” The fox’s smile grew wider until it had become a beaming grin. Through those words it had been as if a great weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He seemed to look just a little taller in his seat – or maybe it was just Sonic’s imagination. Whatever the case, closure had been at last given to the both of them. As Sonic would put it, all that was left to do was not to dwell on the past, but instead focus on the present. And what a present it was. |
