Back in the early 90s, a certain blue hedgehog had taken the gaming world by storm with such classics as Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. While both games were very solid endeavors, it seemed as it Sonic Team felt they were going to have to out-do their previous tries. And out-do them they did. The third installment of the classic games (fourth if you count Sonic CD) was so ambitious – for it’s time at least – that Sega had to actually split it into two separate games; Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. Together, they form what is perhaps one of the finest 2D platformers out there. The gameplay wasn’t all too different from the ones that had come before it, but I did have a few new additions. First off, you could play as newcomer Knuckles the Echidna, who was able to glide and climb walls. This was also the first main game in the series that let you actually fly as Tails. As for Sonic, he gained the new Insta-shield move, which could help defeat enemies and granted the hedgehog a split second of invincibility. Also of note was his ability to utilize different elemental shields; fire, electric, and water. A first for this game and sadly one we wouldn’t see again until Sonic Generations. Graphic-wise, Sonic 3 & Knuckles was perhaps one of the best looking-games on the Sega Genesis. Taking place primarily on Angel Island, which is able to float via the Master Emerald, the setting boasts some rather lovely locales. Whether it be the starting point of Angel Island Zone, Hydrocity’s underwater goodness (one of the few levels of its kind I can actually say that about), the amazing Ice Cap Zone, the ever-changing seasons of Mushroom Hill, or Hidden Palace’s general beauty, make no mistake about it, this game looks absolutely gorgeous. Let’s talk about the music and how it is some of the best the series has to offer. With fantastic tunes as those from Hydrocity, Ice Cap Zone, Sandopolis, and Hidden Palace, Sonic 3 & Knuckles kicks all kinds of ass in that category. I could listen to Flying Battery all day long. <3 Seriously, the soundtrack for this game is amazing. If you haven’t listened to it, first off, have you been living under a rock, second, go to Youtube and start doing so. You’ll thank me later. |3 So, those are some of my thoughts on Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It’s a fantastic game and one of my favorite in the series. As for the rest of =SB=, what do you all think of this game? Do you find it as good as it seems most of the collective Sonic fanbase does? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Also, tell me if you prefer the Sonic 3 half or the Sonic & Knuckles half of the game. I myself have a preference for the Sonic 3 half. <3 |

Hey guys, you all know the Stealth and Taxman remakes of CD and Sonic 1 & 2 right? Well, they've done something for Sonic and Knuckles as well; http://hcstealth.tumblr.com/post/100311283757/sonic-3-knuckles-20th-anniversary (this is a long one, just warning ya) Please note that this is currently NOT endorsed by Sega, though Stealth has expressed desire to finish this with their backing. |

Hmmmm..i always stay with the classic console versions. Not that i have anything against the remakes, but i feel a lot more comfortable with an actual controller in my hands. I heard that you can connect a controller to those remakes, but IRDK how, nor do i plan on finding out anytime soon. |

There are controllers designed for such devices, actually. The ipod/iphone/idontcare plugs into it. |

Well. Shows what I know. That said, was anyone else disappointed at the lack of representation the Sonic 3 half of this game got in Generations? I mean, Sonic and Knuckles got two stage reps in the HD version's Sky Sanctuary and the 3DS's Mushroom Hill. Sonic 3 didn't get any stages. |

Would have had a kickass remix, it would. I sometimes play the two games (Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles) separately, if only because of a continuity problem that is caused in its current state. Yes, I am that much of a nerd. How the heck would Tails get the Tornado after the Death Egg Zone? At least Sonic 2 had Tails get shot down first. In the original Sonic 3, Tails gets left behind at the end of Launch Base Zone. This works with continuity, as Sonic would then go through Sonic & Knuckles by himself, and Tails would return at the end with the Tornado. However, there's then the continuity problem of the Death Egg exploding at the end of Sonic 3, but Sonic 3 Complete fixes that at least. |

To me, this kind of predicament with continuity is kind of like a "Choose your path" type of thing. Either play 3 and see that it ends with the Death Egg exploding, or play & Knux to see that you still have a job to do, and you still have that wily echidna to outsmart. but then, if you play ONLY & Knux, and play as knux, you have another story. You have to chase down this weird-looking robot, and make it wish it was never created because he threw a bomb at you while you were chillaxing. Who does that? Ahem, i'm getting off track here but you catch my drift, right? |

To be precise, I play them separately but right after one another. And it's pretty clear the Knuckles story takes place after the Sonic one, whether you're playing the two games together or not. |
