Back in the early 90s, a certain blue hedgehog had taken the gaming world by storm with such classics as Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. While both games were very solid endeavors, it seemed as it Sonic Team felt they were going to have to out-do their previous tries. And out-do them they did. The third installment of the classic games (fourth if you count Sonic CD) was so ambitious – for it’s time at least – that Sega had to actually split it into two separate games; Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. Together, they form what is perhaps one of the finest 2D platformers out there. The gameplay wasn’t all too different from the ones that had come before it, but I did have a few new additions. First off, you could play as newcomer Knuckles the Echidna, who was able to glide and climb walls. This was also the first main game in the series that let you actually fly as Tails. As for Sonic, he gained the new Insta-shield move, which could help defeat enemies and granted the hedgehog a split second of invincibility. Also of note was his ability to utilize different elemental shields; fire, electric, and water. A first for this game and sadly one we wouldn’t see again until Sonic Generations. Graphic-wise, Sonic 3 & Knuckles was perhaps one of the best looking-games on the Sega Genesis. Taking place primarily on Angel Island, which is able to float via the Master Emerald, the setting boasts some rather lovely locales. Whether it be the starting point of Angel Island Zone, Hydrocity’s underwater goodness (one of the few levels of its kind I can actually say that about), the amazing Ice Cap Zone, the ever-changing seasons of Mushroom Hill, or Hidden Palace’s general beauty, make no mistake about it, this game looks absolutely gorgeous. Let’s talk about the music and how it is some of the best the series has to offer. With fantastic tunes as those from Hydrocity, Ice Cap Zone, Sandopolis, and Hidden Palace, Sonic 3 & Knuckles kicks all kinds of ass in that category. I could listen to Flying Battery all day long. <3 Seriously, the soundtrack for this game is amazing. If you haven’t listened to it, first off, have you been living under a rock, second, go to Youtube and start doing so. You’ll thank me later. |3 So, those are some of my thoughts on Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It’s a fantastic game and one of my favorite in the series. As for the rest of =SB=, what do you all think of this game? Do you find it as good as it seems most of the collective Sonic fanbase does? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Also, tell me if you prefer the Sonic 3 half or the Sonic & Knuckles half of the game. I myself have a preference for the Sonic 3 half. <3 |

Yep. You can even read the instructions for each game too. The best part? They're in perfect detail. Even the useless notes section of some of them! You can even zoom in to read the small print! They had the same thing in Gems collection (however, i feel that that one lacks something, idk what, but something is missing from gems that mega collection can easily fill in.) |

That's it! Yeah. Back to what you asked me (what the hint hot line looks like, ) I haven't gotten a chance to do that yet. However, I will this weekend. |

Ah, Sonic 3 & Knuckles. My favourite of the series to this day. Must have completed it at least 10 times by now (more if you count each character's playthrough separately) and I never really get tired of revisiting it. It's just so good. First played it by renting both Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles together from the video store (thanks multi rental deals) and completed a file for each of the three characters on a different slot each. I remember renting it a few times after that and finding out my data had been erased: leading me to play through and complete it again each time. And not a care was given. I currently own about three copies of the game: The one included with Sonic Mega Collection for the Gamecube, one with Sonic Mega Collection for the PC and one in Sonic Classic Collection for the DS. The version I play the most however would be Sonic 3 Complete, which was mentioned earlier in this thread. It's generally the most convenient option for me and the extra features are anywhere between helpful to being a great way to freshen the game up a bit. As for questions posed earlier in this thread: I'd say Sky Sanctuary with Hydro City and Lava Reef Act 1 with honourable mentions. The former two are mostly aesthetic design and music. But Sky Sanctuary has both of these and more. As Sonic or Tails you play through the stage normally. Eggman has just made off with the Master Emerald and Knuckles, realising he's been duped, opens up the path to help you catch him with the last of the strength he can muster before giving in to exhaustion. Over the course of the stage you make your way up through the crumbling ruins while fighting an army of Eggrobos (which happen to be my favourite Badnik) while occasionally facing off against Mecha Sonic piloting one of the Doc's old mobiles. At the end of the stage you face off against Mecha one last time without any assistance from one of the mobiles. Victorious, the explosion causes the section of the ruins you're on to start collapsing, leaving Sonic and Tails to run up a fast collapsing spiral ramp to catch up to and board the Death Egg. It's great. As Knuckles the stage serves as the arena for his final boss fight. As with Sonic & Tails he faces off against Mecha Sonic which has been tasked with guarding the stolen Master Emerald. The fight is the same as before but with one difference: When Mecha is defeated it leaps onto the Master Emerald and absorbs some of its power, allowing the machine to turn into Super Mecha Sonic. As you'd expect it's invincible in this state, the only windows to attack being the brief moments where Mecha runs out of power and has to recharge. While maybe not as dramatic as Sonic's final confrontation with Eggman it's still an interesting boss fight and pretty cool on top of that. Man I love this stage~ I think the universal answer for everyone was at some point "Carnival Night Zone Act 2". I managed to get past it as a kid by timing my jumps to make the cylinder go down far enough. It took about 5 minutes to do, and I was usually 4 minutes into the 10 minute time limit at that stage. These days I can't think of anything excessively frustrating. I don't really like Sandopolis much but it's more annoying than anything. I guess the Sonic & Knuckles half of the game in general when it comes to Special Stage hunting too. Outside of Mushroom Hill I know about two locations tops: One in Flying Battery and another in Lava Reef. Thankfully I can get 6 of the 7 Super Emeralds as Sonic and Tails in Mushroom Hill and all 7 with Knuckles (assuming I don't mess a stage up). Oh, and I guess Marble Garden Act 2's boss can be a bit of a pain as Sonic and Tails. Getting rings back is nearly impossible, you have to do a lot of waiting for an opening. It's just not a lot of fun. A bit harsh. I'd say half of Sonic 4 is a terrible game. Episode 2 was actually pretty good. I just wish there was more of it. If they had handled Episode 1 like they did 2 it probably would have been a really solid title. Oh well, what could have been. |

While it's not my absolute favorite (that honor belongs to Unleashed HD) it is in my top three favorite games of the series, right up there with the aforementioned Unleashed and Generations HD.
The hell? We never rented stuff much when I was a kid (least of all games) but I don't think we ever had that in the US back in the 90s. Lucky Australians. >_>
Get in line, Ludi, no one seems to like Sandopolis. ;P
Ah come on. It's not that bad. ;P
Harsh? No, Ludi. Sonic 4: Episode 1 is a lazily-designed piece of shit that does not deserve to be called a sequel to a game with as high quality as Sonic 3 & Knuckles. You got me with Episode 2 though. I have yet to play it. |

Good vibes.

Most of my memories and nostalgia with Sonic 3 & Knuckles is with the S&K Collection. As such, I actually prefer the PC tracks of Carnival Night, Ice Cap, and Launch Base. I'm pretty fond of Sonic 3 Complete for the ability to switch in Genesis versions of those tracks. :3 |

Ok, I checked the manual for the aforementioned hint hot line and I couldn't find any indication of the picture and numbers that I posted in mega collection. Sega must've gotten rid of this. Having said that, the picture and numbers that I'll repost must be what was on the manuals at the time. Spoiler: click to toggle And yeah, they did change some of the musics for the PC version, Holly. Why? We don't know. Sounds horrible though. |

I actually like the different music, though. To be honest, I prefer this version of Ice Cap. I find the original version sort of boring, to be honest. |

Different strokes for different folks. But yeah. S&K were what led me to be a gamer. My uncle Mark got me the Genesis when I was 4 years old, and it came with that game. |

Dude, Launch Base is sweet. Possibly the most unique stage in a Sonic game to date. The stage theme was so upbeat for it being a final stage of sorts. To top it all off, it's where the Death Egg has its big moment. Points, man. |
