Thoughts on Sonic 3 & Knuckles?

Back in the early 90s, a certain blue hedgehog had taken the gaming world by storm with such classics as Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. While both games were very solid endeavors, it seemed as it Sonic Team felt they were going to have to out-do their previous tries. And out-do them they did. The third installment of the classic games (fourth if you count Sonic CD) was so ambitious – for it’s time at least – that Sega had to actually split it into two separate games; Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles.

Together, they form what is perhaps one of the finest 2D platformers out there. The gameplay wasn’t all too different from the ones that had come before it, but I did have a few new additions. First off, you could play as newcomer Knuckles the Echidna, who was able to glide and climb walls. This was also the first main game in the series that let you actually fly as Tails. As for Sonic, he gained the new Insta-shield move, which could help defeat enemies and granted the hedgehog a split second of invincibility. Also of note was his ability to utilize different elemental shields; fire, electric, and water. A first for this game and sadly one we wouldn’t see again until Sonic Generations.

Graphic-wise, Sonic 3 & Knuckles was perhaps one of the best looking-games on the Sega Genesis. Taking place primarily on Angel Island, which is able to float via the Master Emerald, the setting boasts some rather lovely locales. Whether it be the starting point of Angel Island Zone, Hydrocity’s underwater goodness (one of the few levels of its kind I can actually say that about), the amazing Ice Cap Zone, the ever-changing seasons of Mushroom Hill, or Hidden Palace’s general beauty, make no mistake about it, this game looks absolutely gorgeous.

Let’s talk about the music and how it is some of the best the series has to offer. With fantastic tunes as those from Hydrocity, Ice Cap Zone, Sandopolis, and Hidden Palace, Sonic 3 & Knuckles kicks all kinds of ass in that category. I could listen to Flying Battery all day long. <3 Seriously, the soundtrack for this game is amazing. If you haven’t listened to it, first off, have you been living under a rock, second, go to Youtube and start doing so. You’ll thank me later. |3

So, those are some of my thoughts on Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It’s a fantastic game and one of my favorite in the series. As for the rest of =SB=, what do you all think of this game? Do you find it as good as it seems most of the collective Sonic fanbase does? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Also, tell me if you prefer the Sonic 3 half or the Sonic & Knuckles half of the game. I myself have a preference for the Sonic 3 half. <3

Haha, when you look it that way, the lock-on system could be seen as a predecessor to DLC of sorts. XD

Hey, Release half a game for full price and then release the second half later for more money.
Sounds like DLC to me.

Well, in SEGA's defense, Sonic 3 and Knuckles was a pretty ambitious game - back then, a single cartridge wasn't powerful enough to hold all they wanted to put in. Personally, I'm glad they went the route they did, instead of giving us a single half-assed, 'what might of been' game.

Though, today, they don't have any such excuse. *glares at Sonic 4*

Yeah, i'm glad i found that out. Like i said, i didn't know what to do with that strange cart when i was a kid back then, and by the time i put two and two together, I was at an age where I knew about it, yes but didn't demonstrate it. When i did, I went from surprised to really happy, and in love with the whole game. Loved Sonic 3, but Sonic 3 and Knuckles? Yes please.

And you're right about Sonic 4. Exactly WTF? And now they're going off the console gaming reservation for mobile gaming? Sega...whatrudoin.....Sega, STOP!

And now i'm kinda glad that I didn't play Sonic 4. Wanna play generations on 3DS though...now that i need to experience.

Sonic 4 is a terrible game. My personal least favorite in the series. As for Generations... personally, I'd stick to the console/PC versions.

No, the game isn't on the Wii, for whatever ridiculous reason. I'd just go for the 360/PS3 version if you have any of those systems. Far better version.

Ok.....since I don't have a 360 or ps3, 3ds is my next option.

At one point, it was carnival night zone. You know the contraption I'm talking about, I'm sure.

While I do indeed know what you're talking about, I have to say something; I've never understood what the huge deal about the barrel was. Yes, when you're first playing Carnival Night and don't know what to do it can be annoying. But once you figure it out, it becomes the easiest thing in the world to bypass.

Yeah, that's true, however: there is no indication, anywhere in the freaking game, on how you're supposed to pass it.
Indeed, there is nothing more repulsive than these monsters that defy nature and are known by the name of witcher, as they are the offspring of foul sorcery and witchcraft. They are unscrupulous scoundrels without conscience and virtue, veritable creatures from hell capable only of taking lives. They have no place amongst decent and honest folk.

I actually had to call the Sega Game help hotline, or whatever it was called at the time. Saved me from child frustration.

I believe the ad looked like this inside the instruction manual.

However, i don't remember having to pay $.95 a minute recorded or $1.50 a minute live. I was a kid at the time, it was in the early 2000's. Wasn't it free at one time or another?

That may be true, but at the same time once you do figure it out, there's nothing to getting through it.

Was that from the original instruction manual? I'm sure things had changed since 1994. xD

Close to it, I'm certain. Gotta boot up Sonic Mega Collection and look at its manual (LOVE stuff like that! )
