Back in the early 90s, a certain blue hedgehog had taken the gaming world by storm with such classics as Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. While both games were very solid endeavors, it seemed as it Sonic Team felt they were going to have to out-do their previous tries. And out-do them they did. The third installment of the classic games (fourth if you count Sonic CD) was so ambitious – for it’s time at least – that Sega had to actually split it into two separate games; Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. Together, they form what is perhaps one of the finest 2D platformers out there. The gameplay wasn’t all too different from the ones that had come before it, but I did have a few new additions. First off, you could play as newcomer Knuckles the Echidna, who was able to glide and climb walls. This was also the first main game in the series that let you actually fly as Tails. As for Sonic, he gained the new Insta-shield move, which could help defeat enemies and granted the hedgehog a split second of invincibility. Also of note was his ability to utilize different elemental shields; fire, electric, and water. A first for this game and sadly one we wouldn’t see again until Sonic Generations. Graphic-wise, Sonic 3 & Knuckles was perhaps one of the best looking-games on the Sega Genesis. Taking place primarily on Angel Island, which is able to float via the Master Emerald, the setting boasts some rather lovely locales. Whether it be the starting point of Angel Island Zone, Hydrocity’s underwater goodness (one of the few levels of its kind I can actually say that about), the amazing Ice Cap Zone, the ever-changing seasons of Mushroom Hill, or Hidden Palace’s general beauty, make no mistake about it, this game looks absolutely gorgeous. Let’s talk about the music and how it is some of the best the series has to offer. With fantastic tunes as those from Hydrocity, Ice Cap Zone, Sandopolis, and Hidden Palace, Sonic 3 & Knuckles kicks all kinds of ass in that category. I could listen to Flying Battery all day long. <3 Seriously, the soundtrack for this game is amazing. If you haven’t listened to it, first off, have you been living under a rock, second, go to Youtube and start doing so. You’ll thank me later. |3 So, those are some of my thoughts on Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It’s a fantastic game and one of my favorite in the series. As for the rest of =SB=, what do you all think of this game? Do you find it as good as it seems most of the collective Sonic fanbase does? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Also, tell me if you prefer the Sonic 3 half or the Sonic & Knuckles half of the game. I myself have a preference for the Sonic 3 half. <3 |

Best in the series, hands down. This game was huge, possibly SEGA's biggest title for the console, especially against its competition which included Donkey Kong Country and Super Metroid in the same year. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has a certain brilliance to it, the way the game moves via cutscenes, the excellent design each stage contains making one another so unique in terms of theme, and the new updates included (shield properties, sub bosses, fuller 3D special stages with significant difficulty, and Knuckles). This will probably remain to be the most impressive work I've seen on a SEGA console, which really isn't a bad thing. Hey! It's been ages since I've posted here. |

The very first game I played was Sonic and Knuckles, back when I was 3 or 4 years old. However, I would not play Sonic 3 until a few years later. Now being the dumb kid i was, I didn't know what this "black cartridge with a lid" did. I opened it, placed it in my new Sega Genesis, and the words "NO WAY!" were on my screen. Placed it down, and I got to play the game. fast forward a few more years, and I fully unlocked the full potential of the two games. It has been my favorite game ever since. Now I have it on the sonic mega collection on the gamecube, I can die happy. I cleared the game with every character, got every emerald. I feel very accomplished lolz. |

Ah! I forgot all about the cutscenes! I like how they help to connect all the stages. Gives them a certain charm about them.
Indeed. Some of the best level design in the series is in this game. Actually, Sonic 3 and Knuckles has my favorite classic stage of all time - Hydrocity. Damn I love that level~
I must be the only person who doesn't like Sonic 3 & K's special stages. I find it difficult to control Sonic in it. Music's awesome though.
Ha, welcome back!
Mega Collection was what introduced me to this game. Fun times~
Congrats! I've never been able to do that.

Hey Blaire, if you like S3&K, you should check out Sonic 3 Complete. This is a ROM hack of S3&K, but it actually displays everything that happened in the game, in the order that the games events take place, and it also offers so much more without straying from the beloved game play that we both love. YouTube it, I'm sure you'll be surprised and pleased. |

Fix'd that for you. ;P
Oh, Sonic 3 Complete? That''s something I've heard of from time to time. Maybe I'll check it out on Youtube one of these days. ;P So, Flying Battery was originally supposed to take place after Carnival Night Zone? Huh, that's something I never knew about this game. |

Wait? Two Flying Battery zones? As in, there were supposed to be two in the game originally? Or does the hack have two? |

In a sense, yes. Only difference is slight aesthetic and a unused cut scene when moving from FB to Ice cap zone. |

You know, now that I think about it, that would make for a potentially cooler intro to Ice Cap Zone. |

You know it. Would make more sense than being shot out of a cannon in a carnival. Wonder how far ice cap was from Carnival night? |

Ah, that's a good one there. As for me, I absolutely love Hydrocity Zone, and consider it one of the few good underwater levels in the series. The level design is spectacular - I love all those half-pipes you travel across and as an artist of sorts, I find the blue, green, and purple color palette to be really fitting for the level. The music for both acts is amazing, though I have a preference for Act 1, I love both the bosses and you don't slow down more than is necessary for a Sonic level. I know Sonic's about more than speed, but most of the other water levels in the series are too slow-paced for my liking in any kind of platformer. |
