Good day people of Sonic Blast. This is your neighborhood admin Blaire speaking. Or, typing, as the case may be. Ah well. Anyway, as you all are no doubt aware (if you aren’t, than I ask if you’ve been living under a rock for the past fifteen or so years), the characters of the Sonic series have gone through some changes over the years. Now then, let us look back at some of them, shall we? First, the Classic style: ![]() ![]() First introduced with the series’ premier game, Sonic the Hedgehog, the Classic Style is instantly-recognizable, even among people that are not greatly invested in the games. It is marked by a few key elements – characters tend to be short and pudgy, with black eyes and very spindly limbs. It’s a style that people could most certainly refer to as ‘cute’ and ‘adorable’, though some images that use this art form can have an interesting ‘badass’ nature to them in a way, as shown here; ![]() ![]() There are some subtle differences among this style. Things such as characters having either one or two cuffs on their gloves, Sonic having buckles on his shoes in some images, and so forth. As well, there have been different interpretations of the classic style throughout the years in other medium; ![]() ![]() ![]() Even the games themselves have done something like this with Sonic CD here. ![]() Next, we have the Modern look. ![]() ![]() First seen in Sonic Adventure, the modern style is the one that has been used for the games the longest. It is also the style that may or may not be the most familiar to newer fans of the franchise. The modern style is different from that of the classic in some key elements; characters tend to be taller in this style than they were in their classic forms, as well as the addition of colored irises, and somewhat more streamlined or longer features (for example, many of the Adventure-era modern artworks depict Sonic with longer quills than those of the classic games). And, just as with the classic art style, there have been but many interpretations of the modern style in various medium, and even amongst the games themselves; ![]() Now that we have gotten that out of the way, I’ve got a simple question for you all; which style do you prefer? Classic? Or Modern? Personally, between the two, I’m more of a fan of the modern style. To me, while the Classic style does have plenty of good points to it and characters look rather nice in this style, I feel that the modern look is what really screams ‘Sonic’ to me. Yuji Uekawa has this unique style, where every character can look distinctive, yet still as if they belong in the same universe (not that the classic style didn’t do so as well, of course). There’s clearly some anime influence in this art style (which makes sense, given where the series originiated, of course), an influence that I feel really works for the series. So to reiterate, I ask you all again – which style do you prefer - Classic? Or Modern? |

I personally love the classic designs more than the modern designs. While I don't care for his classic animation style, I feel that each classic game represented him as cute, but a bad a*s character with a bit of attitude who will not stop at anything to save his friends. Finally I grew up with the classic style, and personally back when Sonic Adventure first came out with the new character designs, as a 9 year old kid I wasn't too fond of Sonic's new look and I wasn't a fan of Sonic Adventure. When I grew up a tad bit, I learned to look over the silly design change and enjoy Sonic Adventure DX when I purchased it on Valentine's day 2005. I like both designs, but I'll always love the classic look better. |

I prefer the Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 era design. He looks lean with more of an attitude. The old style is fine but he looks bloated and isn't really depicted as having an attitude much. Except for the Sonic CD art where he and Metal Sonic are going at it, I really like that art.

I agree. CD (and by extension the OVA) had a really good rendition of Classic Sonic. And yeah, I feel the Adventure+ artwork makes more sense for the characters - it would make sense for characters who run fast to be lean and streamlined. |
