Maybe the Lightning Rod ability will be useful in Double Battles? I don't know. Gen 3 did bring that in the first place, so maybe there will be more of those. I don't know...
Ding ding ding, we have a winner. It'll probably useless in singleplayer since you should never be up against a lightning mon with something weak to it (unless you're one of those people who plays in set style), but it'll add another layer of strategy to your doubles and triples. Seems like a pretty solid ability for it all things considered.

As for those '"Prehistoric Forms", I have absolutely no idea what this will do. All I remember is that Team Aqua and Team Magma captured the two legendaries and tried to do SOMETHING with them, and I think in these games, they've finally done. The "Prehistoric Forms" are probably the final results of all those experiments they conducted at that time.
Their goal was never to alter Groudon and Kyogre. Each team believed that the land or the sea was better (Magma and Aqua respectively) and sought their respective legendary to create more of what they desired, since the two are said to be responsible for the creation of the world's landmass and oceans.

I don't remember if each team saw the folly of their ways in the originals, but in Emerald they realise how bad of an idea it is when the world's weather is thrown into termoil as the two clash.

And now, thoughts:

What the heck did they do to Swampert. Oh joy, Swift Swim. That'll go great on that Rain Dance team I don't have.

Sceptile probably got the best Mega design. And is the one I wasn't considering. Bleh.

I like the idea of Prehistoric Devolutions. It reminds me of Primal Dialga in the second Mystery Dungeon games. Gameplay wise, it'll probably just be a fancy variant of Mega Evolution or some sort of forme change.

What the heck did they do to Team Magma. Poor Tabitha.

Why the heck does Team Aqua look so much cooler. Not switching for that.

Steven's new design is pretty good. Also yay Steven over Wallace.

Trainer designs make use of Emerald colouring and overall style. Full package remakes confirmed?

Mixed feelings, but ultimately non-issues, I guess.

Worth making a note that Blaziken's Mega Stone will be available in game for those that didn't get the event one.
I know it seems obvious but some people I spoke to still didn't think it would be included.

It will probably be fine when in motion or in other artwork, that render may make it seem more googly. Not noticeable at all in the screenshots.

And ah, that is true regarding Lightning Rod. Double battles should be nice.

I was a wimp before anchor arms. Now I'm a jerk and everyone loves me~

Really glad Steven got picked over Wallace too. I never liked how he was dethroned in Emerald but hoping (and likely) will have Emerald's additions.

Further details have been revealed about the Pokémon, Mega Sableye. It is confirmed that Mega Sableye retains its Dark/Ghost-type, but rather than keep any of the abilities, it gets the ability Magic Bounce. It has increased Defense and Special Attack stats, but decreased Speed. During battle, Mega Sableye shelters itself behind the jewel, from where it can take advantage of any openings its target leaves exposed.
