"I didn't use the whole thing ...."
|
On the heels of their 20th anniversary last year, the Power Rangers are returning to the big screen. Power Rangers owners Saban are teaming with Lionsgate, the studio behind the Hunger Games and Saw franchises, for a new film. It sounds like it could be considered a reboot, in that the press release says it will “re-envision the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” the original incarnation of the series. "Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level," said Power Rangers creator Haim Saban, in a statement. "They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from The Hunger Games to Twilight and Divergent. In partnership with the Lionsgate team, we're confident that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own." "We're thrilled to be partnering with Haim Saban and his team to maximize the potential of this immensely successful and universally recognized franchise," said Lionsgate Chief Executive Officer Jon Feltheimer. "The Power Rangers stories and characters have been embraced by generations of audiences for more than 20 years, and today they are more powerful than ever. We have the ideal partner and the perfect brand with which to create a motion picture event that will resonate with moviegoers around the world for years to come." 20th Century Fox released two Power Rangers movies in the 1990s, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie. Through its 21 years on the air, with many different casts playing different teams, the Power Rangers TV shows have maintained a loose continuity. Several Power Rangers alumni are set to guest star on the current Power Rangers: Super Megaforce, to celebrate the recent 20th anniversary, which is not the first time Rangers from the past have made return appearances. It remains to be seen if the new film, with its return to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers concept, will have any ties to the TV show continuity or be set apart completely. |

I for one am actually looking forward to this. While I haven't watched any seasons of Power Rangers after Dino Thunder, I can't wait to watch this. I am quite positive it'll be a decent movie.

Ehhhh. I don't know how to feel about this. It could turn out okay, but I get the nagging feeling it won't. Throwing nostalgia aside the original MMPR was pretty bad compared to the source material. I'm not expecting much of anything to come out of this. I'd be very surprised if JDF didn't somehow make an appearance in this (though I think maybe he was appearing in that one fanmade MMPR movie I heard about? I don't know). I'd really have to see more about it before deciding on wether I'd see it or not. |

Jason David Frank is still really huge on the Power Rangers scene, he goes to all the conventions and is always happy to talk to the fans, although I don't think he will be in this, The bridge got burnt pretty bad after the whole Dino Thunder thing. |

Flying Battery Act 2

That bit right there really irks me. It's technically true, but "creator" implies he came up with the entire show himself when the footage is mostly stock footage of Super Sentai. I was eight years old when the first season came out in 1993, so I was the perfect age demographic for the show at the time. I watched it religiously until I turned about 11, and then I started to think I was "too old and too cool" to watch the show anymore. Ironic, considering I'm watching the newer seasons on Netflix as an adult now It's funny how that works, isn't it? Anyway, I'm surprised to hear this news. Is Power Rangers really popular enough to justify a movie right now? I always felt that after the first few seasons, Power Rangers only really got by because it's cheap to make with the stock footage. I think it'd be hard to screw up a Power Rangers movie though, because the formula for any season of power rangers is very simple. I can tell how far I am into any given season just by what plot is being shown to me. For example, a Sixth Ranger always joins the team about 1/4 to 1/3 into the season, after being enemies with them. Halfway in, the bad guys will send in an extra tough monster that the rangers can't beat. Then they'll get a new zord to kill it with. And you know you're about to get to the end of the show when the team's mentor has been kidnapped, their hideout has been destroyed, their zords have been destroyed, and their powers have been taken away. They'll always get all their powers back only at the very last second and completely destroy the bad guys for good. Edited by Nail Strafer, Jun 3 2014, 03:36 AM.

"Power Rangers" is Saban's brainchild, though. Ignoring the fact he Frankensteined together stock footage from sentai shows for the fights, the plots are basically all his. Which results in some awkward situations that make little sense. Considering this would all be original footage I imagine that wouldn't be a problem. Though the fact that they're just going to be milking even more out of MMPR isn't that appealing to me. They've basically been playing off that fact after Saban regained control over the property again with Samurai. Like... try something new instead of pandering to the nostalgia folks might have? Bleh. |
