Come April of this year, Nintendo will no longer be facing unmitigated disaster. You heard that right — Game Boy Advance games are coming to the Wii U Virtual Console. Nintendo is saved.

While the above sentiment isn’t accurately representing the gravity of the GBA additions, which is very low, Nintendo adding GBA games to the Wii U Virtual Console is at least a nice treat for the four of us that own a Wii U and want to replay good games that released over a decade ago.

Remember, the Game Boy Advance had some phenomenal games and series, such as the two Golden Sun games, a handful of Castlevania entries, a couple of Fire Emblem games, and some Metroid installments.

Unfortunately, this is still Nintendo we’re dealing with, and the GBA games will release very slowly and in tiny groups, as is Virtual Console tradition. The first group will consist of Metroid Fusion, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and Super Mario 3 Advanced: Yoshi’s Island. Those were all strong titles when they initially released — particularly Fusion — and likely hold up today. A Japanese graphic floating around the web also shows Advanced Wars, Golden Sun, and F-Zero.

One of the ways Nintendo can inject some life into its flailing Wii U is by releasing a flood of classic quality games, rather than hooking the Virtual Console up to the slow drip of titles that is usually employed. Allowing people to play Golden Sun for the millionth time won’t save the Wii U more than developing fun original titles will, but it at least may get some people to actually turn the console on.

Nintendo did not reveal the prices or specific release date of the games, but April is only a couple of months away.

Its...great to see them finally(what is it, almost three years yet they had a few on the ambassador program ready to go?) do the GBA games but...really? Why on Wii U?

In my opinion Nintendo been making some really questionable decisions lately. I also hear their exploring the free to play idea, which concerns me greatly.

I really feel they need some reorganizing or something, cause it seems like they are focusing on a new era with old ideas.

Free to play? On what?

With Wii mode already there though, I assume that would make the Wii U more of a master collection system. You do have to give them credit, since it's looking like PS4 and Xbox One will likely not have backwards compatibility, especially once their services eventually shut down.

It's a nice touch, I don't think they're meaning it for it to be the Wii U's big thing. It's just a minor addition. Not a big deal.

This isn't a big deal but it does make the Wii U more enticing. I may just get one later on down the road.

I object to your claims
Huh, this is nice news. If anything it may help make the Wii U....

Hold on a moment.

Yoshi’s Island

Nintendo, I love you again.

I have been waiting eight. Freaking. Years for my favorite game of all time to come out on the Virtual Console and Nintendo is going to finally bring it out. I am most pleased with this development.

Sonic and Raven! :3
Now this is pretty cool, I'm hoping some other non-Nintendo published games will make their way to the virtual console. You know games such as Mega Man and Bass and maybe even the Sonic Advance games. (After all Nintendo and Sega teamed up a bit just recently... So who knows right? I wouldn't mind seeing Teen Titans and Teen Titans 2 being re-released but unfortunately I highly doubt this will be the case...) Can't say I'm a fan of Fire Emblem, but I've been meaning to start playing a Metroid game for about 10 years now after watching my cousin play the games in the past. :V
