What's really been pissing me off lately is that people keep going on and on about the forum 'dying.' while it's true that the forum is seeing decreased activity (school, interests taking people elsewhere), the forum is by no means dying. New people do find a home here, topics are made and the forum still has activity. What then is the definition of the forum dying? Is it because they look back through the rose coloured glasses at their interpretation of the forum's past and think that what we had back then was better? Is their view of the past perhaps creating a bias on what they see in the here and now? I would say yes. I challenge those of you who think of the forum in this way to consider that a community does not thrive on those who simply coast to their own tune. A community thrives on those who contribute to it, who add to it, not those who simply expect to get something out of it without doing any of the above. I say those who say the forum is dying are simply not doing enough to ensure that the forum is all that it could be. Honestly, I am getting sick of people who keep spouting and spreading this lie. This forum, and the community that calls this forum home, could be so much more if you actually did something to help out, instead of decrying your interpretation of its status. We do not need that caliber of drama. I say do more and do better, or get out and stop infecting others in this community with this depressing fantasy. I apologize about this thread (whether it needed to be a thread or not), but it's how I feel about this, and I feel it needed to be said. |

I agree. I wouldn't say it's dying, I'd just say it needs more of a group effort to jump start some areas that are lacking and it's what I've been trying to do and have tried to encourage others as well. I just suck at motivating people.... There's no question our activity has slowed down but has it really? Like you said it's rose colored glasses. We used to get almost 30k posts a month but was it real discussion? No. Most of it was spam while core sections went barely touched. In reality the activity didn't go down, just the spam did, which is neither good or bad... I want to dedicate more time to this forum but it's hard with no computer of my own. I want to ask what people think we could do for promotion of this forum. |

Well there is a difference between dying and dead. The forum does seem a lot quieter than it was when I initially joined. It was a bustling metropolis with all sorts of things going on everywhere. Granted, I spent most of my time within Casino Park where the majority of activity took place, but I recall the Roleplay Garden being pretty active too. Nowadays... not so much. Be it due to a lull due to the time of year or older members moving on, there just doesn't seem to be as much happening. Certainly doesn't help that there's nothing much going on Sonic wise either. Just isn't much to talk about recently when it comes to the board's theme. But it's certainly not dead. We're still getting new members coming in and activity is active enough from what I can tell. And it'll probably improve from here with a little time. Just got to wait and see. |

Well, I wouldn't call it a 'lie' - just some people's 'opinion', but that's neither here nor there. Anyway, everyone who has posted here does have a point. When I first joined five years ago (shit, has it really been that long? I'm getting old...) this place was freaking bustling. Activity was everywhere. And in more places than the Casino Park, by the way. As time went on, however, the Casino Park was were nearly all the activity was. Okay, so every other section wasn't 'dead', but most people just wanted to go the the Shack. It's like what Metallix said; we didn't have much in the way of actual discussion for a while. It pretty much is people looking at things through rose-colored glasses. A forum doesn't need a topic or a post popping up ever few seconds to be 'active'. It doesn't need 100 new members a day to be 'active'. We're actually pretty active with what we do have, now that I think about it. Maybe not the most active Sonic site out there, but I wouldn't call us 'dying'. |

My thoughts exactly, only I would say that it is here and there. A big fat thread with the big fat name "STOP SPREADING LIES OMG" right where the new people are gonna see it is unnecessary and in bad taste. People have the right to say that the forum is dying just like they have the right to say that it is the most active it has been in years. Neither one is necessarily true but that doesn't mean you post a drama magnet like this. Not saying that it will cause people to start drama, merely saying that it is dramatic, overly so at that. Honestly I see no point to this at all. What was your motivation for saying this? What end are you trying to meet? The people who claim that the forum is dying are just voicing their opinion and, every time that I've seen, have given legitimate evidence as to why they think that or think it is true. And have provided suggestions to help solve it... Which I say to directly counter this: Nobody is just going around saying "Ugh SB sucks because there aren't 300 posts an hour ugghhh". Likewise nobody is going around saying "This place is dying because it's not how it was 2 years ago". (Or whatever, both are just examples). Again, I feel like I need a magnifying glass to see the point in this thread. Edited by Breakfast Princess, Jan 26 2014, 12:08 PM.

It is an opinion and not a bad one. People have been saying we're dying for years, I don't see why it's a problem now. It has never had that much of a negative impact, at all. Saying it would be a lie, is negative, so I really don't see the point. The thing is though, that Sonic isn't as popular as he used to be back when we were 'lively'. Less people are interested in his games and thus makes us lose activity. It's not our fault that there aren't many people out there interested in a Sonic forum anymore. People grow old and move on with their lives. Shit happens and it would be bad to deny this just because you don't want 'drama' (which hasn't been the case, unless you can provide a source to this). This helps us improve and work on gaining more activity. The problem isn't that we're dying, it's that people forget to acknowledge we survived so long. |

I will admit, the lack of activity in some sections is a little off-putting for me, but not enough to drive me away. I like to discuss Sonic on a Sonic forum, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of new Sonic news and I don't want to create any duplicate threads at risk of breaking a rule. This is the first Sonic forum I've been to that has extremely polite individuals, a friendly staff, and fun members, and while the board does feel quiet, I don't think that necessarily means it's "dying." |

Exactly! People who do this should get warned, ITS NOT DYING. But, like Kitty said, there was no need to put the title in big bold caps, because new members would see it. |

Well, to be quite honest, I'd been annoyed about this for months (and months and months and months). It doesn't happen often, but the latest mention about this from Lacen set me off. He said as such when he made his contributory post in the discussions thread. and THANKFULLY, others who I remember have said that the forum is dying have all left. First two that I remember: DragonFlame and that guy who'd changed his name to Richard Feynman, I believe. good riddance to bad rubbish. And no, this does have a point, because I would like to think that it points out some incorrect thinking in the minds of those who seem to think that an activity ebb or a change in format is a death knell. It may be an opinion to have, but it doesn't mean that it can't get challenged or even admonished and corrected. If all these people are doing is sharing this opinion while presumably doing nothing about it, then it's just dragging down the rest of us who think and act to the contrary. I probably should have disclaimered and said that I only put this thread in this spot because I don't know where else it should go. I point back to what I said earlier in the OP about my reason for this thread's existence. If any of you have a problem with my having said it, then I'm guess I'm just too weird for you. I felt that it needed to be said, so I posted it. It's done. If it doesn't belong in this section, feel free to move it elsewhere. You don't like the thread? let it disappear. Well my problem wasn't with the fact that it was in all caps (because it isn't) but because I think such a title seems... I don't really know the right word for it. It's just not something you would expect to see. And the fact that it's right underneath where new people probably first go to was also my problem. But yeah, you get my point, thankfully.
Oh, now we're calling out specific people again? Seriously, what is wrong with some people on this forum and their preference to start a thread about a problem they have with one person instead of PMing that person about said problem? Geesh. You'd think this would be against the rules.
You're kinda contradicting yourself here. Is it "incorrect thinking" to think that the forum is dying, or is it an opinion? If it is an opinion, then sure it can be "challenged or even admonished", but you shouldn't try to "correct" it.
Tal, come on, read man. I already responded to this in my previous post. Enough to where I figured you'd stop claiming this because it just simply isn't true. Have another look:
Don't believe me? Go have a look for yourself in the discussions thread. Even Lacen, who you claim is one of these people to share this opinion of the forum and doing nothing about it, has provided some suggestions to do something about it himself. So I'd have to say you're wrong on at least one count (his).
No. Just no. You do not talk badly about other members, unless they are trolls (I say that because everybody seems to talk trash about/make fun of trolls and I can see why). That is completely rude and unnecessary. Whether they have left or not, you don't call other people names simply because of an opinion you have. What if those particular members decide to come back? What if they see this thread and see that you called them rubbish? No. Rude, unnecessary, tasteless. I sure hope I never leave for a bit and come back to find that you've called me rubbish for whatever reason. 'Cause we'll have a problem. Now if you'll excuse me, I have physical therapy to get to. |
