Ugh, more novels. I didn't even know that existed, but thank you for telling me that. It clears things up a little bit.

What I meant by them changing the ending of the first game was how everything was all happy and perfect, and then in the second game Lightning goes to Valhalla instead. The third game did a really good job of explaining why all of that happened, because Etro intervened and saved them and whatnot, but at the time when I played the second game it made no sense to me.

Well, I beat the game recently. I loved it. It's my favorite of the XIII trilogy and think people should give it a try even if you didn't like the first two games (Lightning and the cast are the only ones from the XIII games really. New world, 500 years later, new story, etc.). Here's a mini review for those who care.

  • LR has the most balanced story within the saga, as XIII is confusing and has its terms hidden behind menus with odd pacing while the sequel is ironically the opposite, not enough explained.
  • Nova Crysalia presents a really unique and cool setting among Final Fantasy for its awesome religious themes. It’s definitely by far the most open world of the trilogy too.
  • Lightning receives excellent development, and the surprisingly nice sidequests also show a more passionate and sweet side to her that I never saw before from the prior games. The "Lightning Messages" offer the player very nice thoughts and reactions from Lightning from story events and the sidequests.
  • Lightning and Noel remain my favorite characters of the XIII trilogy and among the series. I really loved the Noel/Yeul/Caius bit at the end.
  • Going back to the sidequests, they have some real nice variety. A lot are emotional and surprisingly deep.
  • The battle system is real addictive. Customizing Lightning is so much fun and it's been a while since I spent so much time in menus. Real fun to get invested in and I hope it gets used again in some form.
  • Development for the rest of the cast are hit and miss. Hope received great development in XIII-2 but he gets none here, although there was some nice interaction and throwbacks between him and Lightning. Sazh continues to feel forced in, although not nearly as bad as XIII-2, but I really wish he is involved in the plot more. Vanille was also kind of disappointing. However, this game made me like Snow a lot more, who's always been the most meh character to me of the trilogy. Noel's situation I found to be personally very understandable while Fang is as charming as ever.
  • There was a few missed opportunities (Like Sazh) but the story brought a satisfying conclusion to the Lightning saga. Started to tear up a bit with Lightning and Odin at the end and forward. Rather happy for Lightning and I'm going to miss her. She's definitely my favorite female in the Final Fantasy series. Granted the ending does indicate the story is definitely over so there should be no more XIII games.

There we go. Overall greatly recommend. For those who plan on playing the game, like the developers, I strongly suggest playing on Easy first. The game still gets pretty challenging. But Easy will make EP abilities cost less so you won't have to worry as much. Also, the first day may seem overwhelming and stressful as it seems like you didn't get much done. Don't let it mislead you. The game actually gives you a lot of time. I finished the main quests by day seven and just did sidequests from there on out. Eventually, since I was eager to get to the final day (The game does have snippets of story even when you finish the quests so don't worry), I used the inn with most of the sidequests done.

I personally really liked this one, although I've been into Final Fantasy for quite a while now. The battle system is rather challenging, but fun, and I really like the characters and action-packed battles. I totally approve of this game.

Also, I would like to ask a favor from for anyone who is my friend here.
If someday we meet in person in the near future, and I had recently done anything that would confirm that I had become a Brony (which as of now I am not one), such as if I had posted on a Pony-related fan-site, drawn a Pony-themed artwork, contributed to a Pony fanfic, or anything else along those lines. If I have done anything like that, I want you to punch me in the face without warning. This make sound like I'm joking, but I am absolutely serious about this. Ignore any future statements retracting this if I ever make any. Though if you do, please first confirm that it is me who is doing it, and not some Brony who is posing as me and wants to see me get punched. I do not wish to go down the path of the Bronies, and hopefully those of you reading this will help me so that it stays that way, if god forbid I ever even attempt it.
Thank you.
